It is actually below average.

Omaha and Des Moines always seemed to be such similar cities, but I could never figure out why Omaha has so many more murders, even per population.

Omaha has 900,000 in the area, and Des Moines has 640,000 in the area. Yes, Omaha is 40% larger than Des Moines, but Des Moines metro tends to have around 5-10 murders per year, and Omaha can have up to 5 times as many, 35-40.

40% more population, 400% more murders. Any idea what drives that? Their demographics really aren't that much different. They have good schools, are pretty wealthy, white collar areas. They're both growing at a nice clip.

Omaha has the 3rd highest black homicide rate behind Detroit and St. Louis. That is the main cause in my book, Omaha has a lot of gang activity compared to its size.

As you can see by the map they are mostly concentrated in North Omaha which is the roughest part of the city.

What's that rate in Omaha?? I know in Chicago it's around 38/100,000. I'm very surprised.

All rates aside.... it basically means between 99.97% and 99.99% of people AREN'T murdered per year, regardless.

We could be looking at different information because I found that Omaha is anywhere from 29-34 per 100,000.

BTW there are only ~85K African-Americans living in Nebraska 4.5% of the total state population.

I think the "ranking" I used was that blacks accounted for 40% of the murders in Nebraska and 55.5% of the murders in Omaha. Yet they only make up a little over 12% of the cities population.

What ever the exact numbers are is it absolutely above the national average And as you demonstrated that is something not expected about Omaha at all.
