2009 - 99, year total = 173
2008 - 93, year total = 179
2007 - 117, year total = 224
2006 - 105, year total = 201* found two more accidental homicides.
2005 - 118, year total = 212
2004 - 115, year total = 263
2003 - 132, year total = 245
2002 - 84, year total = 201
2001 - 123, year total = 249
2000 - 117, year total = 231

2011 map, only includes murders.

2000-2011 map

yellow balloons = double murders
red balloons = triple murders
black balloons = anything greater than a triple murder

there are 13 triple murders, three are overlapped by other balloons.

four were family violence related, 2001, 2002, 2007, 2007.
four happened during robberies, 2000, 2000, 2002, 2004
two were drug/gang related, 2000 and 2003.
one was gang related retaliation, 2003.
one was due to a mentally ill man not taking medication, 2006.
one was from a disturbance, paper did not go into what it started over, 2006.

and there are three black balloons, two are overlapped by other balloons.

one quintuple murder in 2002 after a man killed his family because he ran out of crack.
two quadruple murders in 2003 & 2005, both of which were drug related.

Dallas has improved a lot over the three last years, and hopefully that will continue.

Holy crap, that's more than my homestate of Iowa would get in an entire year, and it has 30 times as many people as Flint.

35 in Nashville through Monday (including 4 murders over the weekend).

4 shooting deaths in North Nashville raise alarm | The Tennessean | tennessean.com

That would seem to put us on pace for somewhere in the 50s-60s for a yearly total...which is a little lower than typical (usually somewhere in the 70-80 range).

Toronto is usually in the 60-80 murder per year range, but last I checked we were only at about 25 so far this year. This is for a population of about 2.6 million.

Chicago updated for the past week:

Through August 24th:

2008: 330
2009: 304 -26
2010: 306 +2
2011: 266 -40

2008-2011: -66 (-20%)

Last year actually saw the lowest level of murders in around 50 years. This year is looking to come in a decent amount below that. We're on pace to creep in below 400 murders, compared to over 900 in the early 90's and around 700 during the early 2000's.

Those numbers looks so weird.

I'm not used to it being that low.
