Ive been to both cities, Ive been to Philly more though and I did like it better. Pitts isnt a bad city, but this is not a fair comparison. Philly is much bigger and has way more stuff. Philly is over twice as large in area, and almost 5 times as large in population
Pitts wins in crime and safety
Philly wins in everything else

While Philly does have the better Downtown.....Pittsburgh's neighborhoods kills Philly's.....

And Pittsburgh Does go pretty much toe2toe with Philadelphia as far an amenities....The only thing you really can't get in Pittsburgh is a good Cheesesteak and scrapple...otherwise their toe2toe...

Philadelphia has more diverse because of a Hispanic ghetto and a chinatown...Outside of that its pretty much black and white like Pittsburgh....a Pittsburgh'er can go to Philly and not feel any culture shock what-so-ever.

Philly is a little bit faster pace but not NYC level to Pittsburgh...

The 2 city's are more alike than they are different.

Location - TOSS - Philly because of the NE Corridor and Beach...Pitt because of the half day drive to dozens of places
Geography - Pittsburgh Green Lush Hill
Size - Pittsburgh's because you can get anywhere from anywhere within the city within a 1/2 hr
Lifestyle - Toss both are very laid back cities that doesn't subscribe to the Pretentious, Fake, Superficial lifestyles of LA's and NYC's...both are Very Blue collar transitioning to white collar
Safety - Pittsburgh hands down
Less Crime - Again Pittsburgh
Walkibility - Pittsburgh because not only is its downtown, but its neighborhoods are extremely walkable....I love Center City, but that's about the only walkable part of Philly..
Skyline - Toss, but Pittsburgh does have the better vantage points.
Downtown - Philadelphia NO QUESTIONS...Even though Pittsburgh is working hard, it has a ways to go
Architecture - Toss both are old cities with Old Architecture mix with modern and I love that type mix.
Food - Mix - Philadelphia cheesesteak, Pittsburgh Primanti's take your pick
Restaurants - Toss everything I can find it one I can find in the other.
Education - Pittsburgh has the better record on population with higer degrees
Museums/Art - Philadelphia but not by much
Festivals - Toss - Both Cities have alot of mainstream and unique festivals.
Tourist attractions/landmarks - Philadelphia again no question
Nightlife - Toss - again Center City kills for a downtown, but Pittsburgh you dont need to be downtown to be in the center of the action.
Generally nicer/friendlier people - Alot of people will say Pittsburgh, but i find it a Toss both are nice...again more Real People vs NYC...I love that..
Parks - Toss the Massive park of Fairmount in Philly..or 3 huge parks in Pitt
Diversity (people) - Philadelphia wins because it has larger hispanics and asain population but both are isolated to their single neighborhood areas...the rest of Philadelphia is largely White and Black like the Burgh..
Diversity (neighborhoods) - Toss while Kensington is full of Hispanics and you have Chinatown...No really a places I would take outoftowners...Pittsburgh has Oakland, Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Scott Twp, Mexican War Streets is more the diversity that people are seeking when they say "diverse".
Weather - Toss Philadelphia does get more sun...But I like rain because I'm a "Green-Lifestyle" person and I love Pittsburgh's Lushness can't have that without the Rain.
Jobs/Economy - Pittsburgh has the lower unemployment right now.
Things to do - Subjective to what a person like's to do...
Better Reputation - Probably Philadelphia, but with its Crime problem widely known across the masses i dont know by how much..
Sports - The Burgh of Course - 6 SB rings, 3 Stanley cups, and 2 world series.
Shopping - Nothing i can find in one city I can't find in the other...Philly win only with the massive mall @ KOP
Transportation - SEPTA is more robust than PAT, but both are far too Reactive and Antiquated than one would like.
Vibrance - Toss Downtown - Philadelphia, Neighborhood Pittsburgh
Cost of living - Pittsburgh
Proximity to other places - you can get to Philadelphia, DC, NYC, Jersey shore, VA beach, Ocean City MD, Poconos, 7 Springs, Cleveland, Erie, Buffalo, Toronto, Chicago, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, W VA, Carolina's all within a half days drive from Pittsburgh.

I don't think these 2 cities are all that comparable. Pittsburgh is good, but Philly is better all-around and more prominent.

Location: Philadelphia

Philadelphia is flanked by both the capital and largest city in the United States. It's one in a string of megapolitan areas.

Geography: Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is within 500 miles of half the population of the United States, plus a fair slice of Canada's population too.

Size: Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is big enough to be important, but small enough not to be overwhelming.

Lifestyle: Philadelphia

Philadelphia has lots and lots of money, and its suburbs are among the best in the country.

Safety: Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh's crime rate is very low for a major city.

Walkibility: Philadelphia

Philadelphia has the advantage here, due to its relatively flat terrain and a street pattern that makes sense.

Skyline: Pittsburgh

Philadelphia's is larger and taller, but Pittsburgh's has more color, more visual balance, and a more striking setting.

Downtown: Philadelphia

Only New York and Chicago have downtowns that are clearly superior Philadelphia's.

Architecture: Push

Both cities have diverse architecture, whether it's housing or skyscrapers.

Food: Philadelphia

Philadelphia has everything from cheesesteaks and water ice to Le Bec Fin. Pittsburgh has some awesome junk food, but not as much high-end food.

Education: Push

Philadelphia has an Ivy League college, but Pittsburgh's educational attainment is slightly better, at least among the working-age population.

Museums/Art: Push

Philadelphia has some of the best museums and lots of funky art, but Pittsburgh swings a sledgehammer too, thanks to its philanthropic tycoons.

Festivals: Pittsburgh

There's no Mummer's Parade in Pittsburgh, but there are lots of championship victory parades to make up for it.

Tourist attractions/landmarks: Philadelphia

Philadelphia is the birthplace of America. That's all anybody needs to know.

Nightlife: Philadelphia

Pittsburgh's nightlife is underrated, but Philadelphia's is among the best in the country as it should be.

People: Pittsburgh

Pittsburghers are generally friendlier than Philadelphians.

Parks: Philadelphia

Pittsburgh has a very extensive park system, but Philadelphia's is incredible.

Diversity: Philadelphia

Philadelphia has a higher percentage of non-white residents than Pittsburgh.

Weather: Pittsburgh

It's cloudier in Pittsburgh, but the high temperature today isn't forecast to be 100+ like it is in Philadelphia.

Jobs/Economy: Push

Philadelphia's fundamentals are better overall, but Pittsburgh has weathered this economic calamity better.

Things to do: Philadelphia

Philadelphia has five times the city population and three times the metro population. There better be more to do there.

Better Reputation: Push

Both cities are massively underrated.

Sports: Pittsburgh

This ain't even close. Suck it, Philly fans!

Shopping: Philadelphia

Three words: King of Prussia.

Transportation: Philadelphia

Philadelphia has better train access, and its airport remains a hub.

Vibrance: Philadelphia

See "things to do."

Cost of living: Pittsburgh

Philadelphia is a bargain for its size, but Pittsburgh is a bargain, period.

Overall: Pittsburgh (heart), Philadelphia (brain)

thats a long list. Ill try to answer all that I can

location- depends on the person. this is an opinion so theres no "winner"

geography- again an opinion

size- philly is way bigger but idk what u mean by "size" not really specific enough sorry

lifestyle- pittsburgh= slower pace philly= faster pace. again another opinion

safety- pittsburgh beleive me lol. but you'll be fine if you stay out of the bad neighborhoods. its easy if you know the city

less crime- kinda the same thing as safety. pittsburgh again

walkibility- philly has a grid layout and is much easier to get around.

skyline- another opinion

downtown- philly. 3rd in the country

architecture- both are similar

food- philly has more food. philly has cheese steaks, soft pretzels, and water ice. cream cheese is made in a different philadelphia (Philadelphia, NY) pittsburgh has sandwhiches with fries in it (i forget the name of it sorry)

restaurants- philly has more because it is much bigger

education- philly wins but it is close. philly has more because it is bigger, and philly has an ivy league school, but pittsburgh also has a lot of colleges, and very good ones too

museums/art- philly. like i said earlier philly being bigger it has more. it also has the art museum where rocky ran up the stairs. pittsburghs are still very good though

festivals- idk any festivals pittsburgh has so i cant answer sorry

tourist attractions/landmarks- philly

nightlife- your probably sick of me saying this but because philly is bigger, it has more nightlife

nicer/friendlier people- I cant answer this question. theres around 300,000 people in pittsburgh and 1.5 million people in philly. you cant just group all those people together and say "these people are nicer than those" everyone is different. every city has nice people, every city has not-so-nice people

parks- philly has the biggest city park in the whole world, so philly wins

diversity (people)- philly is 41% white and pittsburgh is 68% white so philly wins

diversity (neighborhoods)- tie

weather- depends on what kind of weather you like. philly= hotter usually

jobs/economy- philly has more jobs because it is bigger

things to do- they are pretty much the same but pittsburgh is on a smaller scale

Better reputation- idk what people think about pittsburgh, but philly has a bad reputation. a lot of people think it is all ghetto (except center city) and full of crime and all that junk which isnt true. it does have bad neighborhoods, but it also has lots of good neighborhoods too. i dont hear much about pittsburgh, so i dont know its reputation, but i dont think it's bad like philly's so i think pittsburgh has the better reputation, but im not sure.

sports- both cities have MLB, NFL, and NHL. but philly also has NBA, pittsburgh doesnt. so philly has more sports. both have 16 championships overall in pro sports. so pittsburgh has the same amount of championships with less sports. and philly has CRAZY sports fans, and the most passionate, (if not, THE most passionate) fans of all. But a lot of them can be kinda rude to other sports fans. never wear a cowboys jersey or mets hat in philly. anyways, theres not really a winner here

shopping- (here we go again) because philly is bigger, it has more. also it is really close to king of prussia

transportation- never used pittsburghs transportation, so i cant answer this sorry

vibrance- philadelphia

cost of living- pittsburgh

proximity to other places- philly. less than 100 miles away from nyc, about 1-1.5 hours from the jersey shore, 60 miles to Atlantic city (not the nicest city, but beautiful casinos and boardwalk. its kind of like a mini las vegas on the beach) and close to other places like virginia, dc, and pittsburgh

and anything else you would like to add- no you covered enough lol

a lot of my answers were the same- because philadelphia is bigger, it has more of everything. that can be good like: nightlife, museums, schools, restaurants, attractions, people, neighborhoods, and shopping and etc. but it can also be bad, like more crime

by the way you had a couple things on the list twice

I have never been to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, I would pick Philly because Pittsburgh population is dropping fast.

Pittsburgh

1950: 676,806
2009: 311,647

And Philadelphia was losing population fast in the same amount of time.....and Just like Pittsburgh Philadelphia has only recently begun to recover...

Again the Cities are more alike then they are different.....I guess you need to be someone who's actually lived and embraced both for sometime to understand where I'm coming from...

oh you can get Water Ice in Pittsburgh that's not exclusive to Philly...and Pittsburgh has Synders something you can't find in Philly....I mean if we really want to talk junk food as.....

Philadelphia is bigger so it has the better resturant scene....PULEESE!....Reeks of someone who's never been to Pittsburgh....Resturants of all kinds are springing up all across the city.

BlackBeauty The top 10 revenue producing restaurants/lounges in the entire state of Pennsylvania are all located in Center City Philadelphia. Much like NYC dominates the state of NY? Philly does the same in Pennsylvania. Philly is the states mecca for nightlife, culture, higher education etc etc

You are barking up the wrong tree on this one but I admire your passion for defending Pittsburgh..
