You wan tthe truth about Hell? I will give you the truth about hell:

Hell is a small town with a gift shop, an ice cream parlor and a hotel. There is not much else there, just a bunch of farms. You can rent a canoe at the gift shop and canoe through several lakesand interconnecting streams. They take you up to a place to put in the canoes and then you canoe back down into Hell. There are a lot of cold days in Hell. But the springs summer and fall is pretty nice. You can buy one square foor of some farm there and give the deed to your friends aas a joke.

Since that is the only Hell that Christians will ever know, that is all that you will ever know or need to know, about Hell. That is a better hell, you can visit and leave again and you will probably have a nice day.

on the first post, the idea "hell" being (eternal) seperation from God is quite a modern invention/interpretation, since you could no longer make the people believe there is a literal fire burning beneath the ground.

I do not know, when gehenna occured the first in Jewish scriptures as a place of torment after death (Talmud, apocrypha) as far as I know it is found in the 4th Book of Ezra (sometimes called 2nd Esdras), the apocalypse of Baruch, (never read this book) and the Sybilline oracles (teaching universalism). Josephus und Philo seem to have been not familiar with this term.

interpreted by the Bible itself, gehenna is rather a place of extinction then of conscious suffering, with extinction I mean not everlasting extinction, but maybe extinction for the future ages only.

concerning the Jewish ideas of hell, this is very interesting:

Mercy And Judgment by Canon F.W. Farrar

also interesting for historical informations:

Hell: Eternal Torment or Annihilation

Default Yes I Believe In A Real Viable Hell To Contain All Evil At The End Of Time

Yes HELL is a real place that will be used pretty much as a
county jail or state prison would be used in our modern times
to contain all fallen spirits and rebellious human spirits of mankind.

Prison doesn't jail spirits!

In other words, the County Jails and State Prisons are being used as a funeral home or Mortuary?

Believers in a burning Hell don't want to hear anything else. After all, if they and their teachers are wrong, what else are they wrong on?

Hell is the grave in both Hebrew and Greek.

Everyone gets out according to the Apostle John and no word of anything singed.

Gehenna was the trash dump and dead, not living, bodies unworthy of a resurrection were tossed in to it. No feeling in the body so no torment, just no resurrection. The Gehenna in Revelation is simply the symnbolic use to indicate that anyone and everyone tossed in is gone and will never see life again. The SECOND death.

The Lake of Fire is not, Gehenna.
Symbolically, or otherwise.

Lake (Limen) is apparently, a primary word, which carries the meaning of; a harbor or haven.
In other words: "A haven or place of safety in the Presence of the Lamb."

No more being tossed to, and fro, within the sea of humanity.

The Bible's definition of the lake of fire is defined as: second death. - Rev. 20 vs 13,14

Satan ends up in ' second death ' - Rev. 21 v 8

Jesus destroys Satan - Hebrews 2 v 14 B

So, ' second death' is a fitting term for destruction.

The English word hellfire comes from the word Gehenna.
Gehenna was a garbage pit where things were destroyed Not kept burning forever.
So, Gehenna is a fitting symbol for destruction.
Such as the wicked are destroyed forever according to Psalm 92 v 7
