They did Not original in ancient Rome, but mankind's religious family tree can trace its roots to ancient Babylon.
As the ancient people left ancient Babylon they took with them their false non-biblical religious-myth teachings as spread them world wide like a virus plague into the minds of many. They created a greater religious Babylon or Babylon the Great. That is why we see similar overlapping religious concepts and ideas practiced in the world's religions. So strongly entrenched are those old false Babylonian teachings that even when exposed as false people today want to keep that religious mirage alive.

Among the first concepts of Hell as a place was the Hinnom Valley outside of Jerusalem. This place was, in ancient times, a place noted for child-sacrifice and unspeakable evils. The earliest mention of the Valley of Hinnom is in Joshua 15:8; 18:16, where the boundary line between the tribes of Judah and Benjamin is described as passing along the bed of the ravine. On the southern brow, overlooking the valley at its eastern extremity, Solomon erected high places for Molech (1 Kings 11:7), whose horrid rites were revived from time to time in the same vicinity by the later idolatrous kings. Ahaz and Manasseh made their children "pass through the fire" in this valley (2 Kings 16:3; 2 Chronicles 28:3; 33:6), and the fiendish custom of infant sacrifice to the fire-gods seems to have been kept up in Topheth at its southeast extremity for a considerable period (Jeremiah 7:31; 2 Kings 23:10). To put an end to these abominations the place was polluted by Josiah, who rendered it ceremonially unclean by spreading over it human bones and other corruptions (2 Kings 23:10,13-14; 2 Chronicles 34:3-5). From that time it appears to have become the common cesspool of the city, into which its sewage was conducted to be carried off by the waters of the Kidron, as well as a laystall, where all its solid filth was collected. From its ceremonial defilement and from the detested and abominable fire of Molech, if not from the supposed ever burning funeral piles, the later Jews applied the name of this valley Ge Hinnom, "Gehenna," to denote the place of eternal torment. The name by which it is now known is Wadi Jehennam, or Wadi er Rubeb.

After a time, and during the life of Jesus, all the rubbish of Jerusalem was burnt here. Its interesting to note that Aceldama (Field of Blood) was here in this valley, too. It was an evil place filled with stench, fire, and death.

So how does Hell become a place of punishment?

When a Jew died, he was to be buried before sundown that his life be honored. But for evil men, including murderers and traitors, who were not to be honored but rather ridiculed and shamed, the body might be cast into a fire or a rubbish heap. This sometimes occurred with enemies of Israel, too.

To be condemned to Gehenna can only mean a verdict that, besides condemning a man to death, also ordains that, after death, his body should be cast into the loathsome Valley of Hinnom. This being the sense of Gehenna in the Hebrew Scriptures, I am confident that this is the sense in which Christ used it.

"Gehenna" appears in the Greek Scriptures twelve times (Matthew.5:22,29,30; 10:28; 18:9; 23:15,33; Mark 9:43,45,47; Luke 12:5; James 3:6). Not one of these passages has reference to the so-called "final state." The Lord explicitly identifies Gehenna with Isaiah 66:23,24 by speaking of it as the place of "unextinguished fire, where their worm is not deceasing, and the fire is not going out" (Mark 9:46).

To be cast unto the rubbish heap instead of being buried, in Jesus' day and in his faith, was to be separated from God. Heaven was being in proximity to God; Hell was being separated or far from God. Being cast into Gehenna guaranteed being separated from God.

The concept of Hell has changed over the millennia, but today's ideas were first put forth in the Italian vernacular by Dante in his Divine Comedy. In such a common language, it met a much wider audience than most writings of its day. The nine layers of Hell, with degrees of punishment to "fit the crime," became extremely popular and resulted in numerous paintings and depictions of Hell and the Devil (or Satan). To this day, images and concepts of Hell are close to Dante's vision than to the real history and the beliefs and understandings of Jesus.

Peace be with you.
Those that deny the reality and existence of hell are those who wish to justify their own flirtations with sin, who deny responsibility for their actions and who hope they will neither get caught in sin or be punished for it.

Human justice, especially in America, is debauched and spotty at best. Those who deny hell are hoping, by their perverse notions to claim the vagaries of divine love as an excuse for their crimes against God and man.

In truth hell is a real place with real eternal suffering. There is only one escape - the blood of the lamb Jesus Christ accepted by the sinner.

Love will not save - only the blood will save.

How can a loving God throw people into hell? A rebuttal is to ask what it is that God is supposed to love here? Is God supposed to love sin, violence, lying and murder? Does God reward evil with heaven using love as justification? He does not.

God is not fair. God is JUST.

Justice DEMANDS hell. And so it opens its fiery maw to receive the unjust, the wicked and the contemptuous of God and of His word.

Those who deny hell, deny justice itself. They live in a fantasy world where license to sin is excused by a mushy love that exists neither in heaven or upon earth. They are living a delusion that will ultimately destroy them. It is time to stop acting like spoiled children, to put away the things of childhood and act like alert adults.

Jesus' death upon the cross was NOT universal. It applies ONLY to those who accept it. Repent sinner and live. Your excuses of love will not save you. You are damned to hell if you do not. Accept the blood of Jesus NOW. It's your only hope.

and that's just me, hollering from the choir loft...

Actually, 'just' and 'fair' are synonymous terms. They have the same or similar meanings.

Just Synonyms, Just Antonyms | Thesaurus.com

Fair-minded Synonyms, Fair-minded Antonyms | Thesaurus.com

Even if you wish to argue that 'fair' does not have the exact same meaning as 'just', it is nevertheless incorrect to state that God is not fair. To be 'fair' means to be impartial. God is impartial and therefore is fair.
2 Chronicles 19:7 "Now then let the fear of the LORD be upon you; be very careful what you do, for the LORD our God will have no part in unrighteousness or partiality (masso) or the taking of a bribe."

Romans 2:11 For there is no partiality (prosópolémpsia) with God.

1 Peter 1:17 If you address as Father the One who impartially (aprosópolémptós) judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth;

It's how one wishes to understand the word "fair"

One of our theologians once wrote that Abraham's exchange was about God being fair to the righteous.
"Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? What if there are fifty righteous people in the city?
Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?
Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike.
Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?"
Genesis 18:20-28,32
Abraham didn't question the justice of God. In fact, he affirms that he is a God who is fair. Yet, he also knew God is love and pleaded for his mercy to be shown to the cities for the sake of the righteous.
In this sense, God is fair to his Justice.

Well, Jesus' death is both: John 3:16
  • objective .... For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son
  • subject ...... that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life

The objective is not what God looks for in the heart ... it is the subjective.

Jesus did Not deny hell, but Jesus taught Not postmortem penalties after death but sleep in death - John 11 vs 11-14

At Jesus' death didn't Jesus go to hell ?_________according to Acts 2 vs 27,31; Psalm 16 v 10 yes dead Jesus was in hell.

Jesus was well educated in the Hebrew OT Scriptures which also teach ' unconscious sleep in death '.
References: Ecclesiastes 9 v 5; Psalms 5 v 5; 13 v 3; 115 v 17; 146 v 4; Daniel 12 vs 2,13

So, the Bible's hell is a real place, the Bible's hell is the stone-cold grave where the dead sleep until resurrected.

The false pagan non-biblical hell is a permanent hell which is often taught as Scripture, but the Bible's hell is temporary [ or else Jesus could not have been resurrected by God out of hell if it was permanent - Acts 3 v 15; 13 vs 30,37 ]

According to Revelation 20 vs 13,14 everyone in the Bible's hell will be ' delivered up ' meaning will be resurrected out of biblical hell. Then, emptied-out hell is cast vacant into a symbolic ' second death ' for vacated hell.

Would you say that the law, or the scales of Justice requires balance in order to be fair ?_______
Such as: Jesus balanced the scales of Justice for us when he paid the price for Adamic sin.
