Haha, calm down you two! All I was saying was it it's quite presumptuous to throw everyone in a certain situation into one bucket because of their age. And no, I'm in my 30's. It's all good.....just breath...

When you get a little older, you'll eventually see what we were talking about. I actually read thru your post very quickly, or I would've made a few more comments. Things like "the drunker my family gets ....." Do you realize that getting drunk on a regular basis is NOT considered a normal thing? Believe me, growing up I thought it was too, but it ain't. Everyone you talked about, I bet couldn't quit drinking very easily.

Presumptuous has nothing to do with it, life experience does. I've spent my entire life around drinkers, and I've seen EVERY kind. People are people, and I've yet to meet a 'truly happy' person that gets drunk on a regular basis.

I know plenty of places in Chicago, in nice areas, that one can get a nice or at least decent one bedroom.

"Nice" is a relative term... Not everyone has the same definition. I don't think I could rent a one-bedroom apartment in the Gold Coast for $900 that would meet my definition of nice. I found a somewhat nice place there in 2003 for $1100, and we thought it was a steal. We stayed in our old place though. And I'm sure that place is more expensive now.

Seriously. Isn't there an alcoholism forum somewhere else?

I can drop a 100 bucs easy at a bar. Or how about going out for dinner and a movie? If I had to, I'd skip that night in the bar or the movie and dinner, and enjoy my 1 bedroom apt.

I'm not living like some kind of animal to save 1 or 2 hundred bucs a month. That's just me though, maybe your different. I can see a college kid doing it, but not an adult who's out in the work force already.
Because any person who isn't 75 living in Chicago is never home. Why would anyone pay so much to live alone for an extra wall you'll never functionally use?

To be in the middle of one of only perhaps three of the thriving urban megalopoli in the United States and to sit at home in the evening?

That's just weird. I was never home, and from the sounds of it most other forumers aren't either.

You can always move back to NYC if it doesn't work out.

Oh it's just a little thread drift. It happens, it's over, relax.

The general consensus to the OP is that yes, she should be very conscientious when making this decision. But of course none of us can tell her what to do.
