Yeah but how many people realize that? My point is about perception versus reality. Crime is rarely mentioned when people visit NO, I guess because there are so many other interesting things about that town.

Yeah, I felt a whole lot less safer when in NOLA. And, NOLA is the only place I've happened upon a dead body in an alley. So they take the cake for biggest dump.

Yeah perceptions can be very misleading. When people think of South LA(formerly South central), what first comes to mind is a a region with mostly black ghettos and mainly Crips and Bloods at war . In reality, South LA is more Mexican/Central American than black by a comfortable margin and Los Angeles period is not the same city it once was in the 80s and 90s. Despite its gang capital rep, LA has less homicides than Chicago now while being the bigger city.

Chicago seems safer today than it was when I left in 1974. However, my city training early on has taught me to never look anyone in the eye, always walk as though you have a purpose in mind and never talk to strangers. I still practice that today, in Charlotte, NC. Also, of course, for the ladies, never carry those big, huge purses that could easily be "picked", keep everything of value very close to your body at all times. Make sure that there is not a visible or easy point of entry to your bag by an unscrupulous person. And, my mother taught me that thick, not thin straps for a shoulder bag are best as a thief could snip a thin one and be gone with your purse before you knew it. Simple common sense.

Excellent advice. Now, what common sense approach do you use to avoid being hit by a stray bullet while sitting in traffic?

Don't "sit in traffic". Keep moving. there are a zillion ways to get around traffic in Chicago; the most important one being taking public transport.

I guess you haven't been to Chicago for many, many years.

No, but. I have visited often enough (annually) and have a true aversion to traffic. Always have been able to figure out "another way" be it side streets or parallel streets or even alleys. OR, simply don't go anywhere when the traffic is bad (work odd hours, for example). There's always a way around it!

When have people been hit by a bullet during traffic?

Most have been parked cars.
