Im sure this is just a knee jerk comment, but seriously? The income numbers for NYC are not all that different than Chicago. There surely aren't 8.4 Million "rich people" living in NYC.

There is no denying that gentrification has pushed a good deal of poverty out of the city. To be fair, the same is happening in Chicago, though I would say we're a bit further behind on the curve.

Manhattan & Brooklyn may be a lot safer than they used to be, but last I checked, Bronx County is one of the poorest in the country, while Manhattan is one of the wealthiest in the country. With high poverty rates still in boroughs like the Bronx, NYC's is still able to maintain a considerably lower crime rate. Why do you think that is? And a lot of these folks ride the subways to work or hustle in Manhattan (keep in mind that Harlem is in Manhattan as well, and East Harlem is not exactly a lily white or mixed rich area either).

Where to begin with what's wrong with this post??

Obama's approval ratings have been "underwater" since June of this year. Conservatives have bashed Chicago for more than a generation. Presidential Popularity Over Time

Yet conservatives have been professing how much they hate and revile parts of the country for decades. Here's commentary from 2009, after Chicago's bid for the Olympic games fell through. http://mediamatters.org/research/200...rvative/155310

The main reason why NYC is so much safer isn't because it's so expensive that only the rich can afford to live here. We have 8.4 million people in NYC. They're not all rich. Not even 20 percent. The large percentage of New Yorkers are working class. The median per capita income in 2000 was $22 402. 21% of the population lives below the federal poverty line. No, the main reason why New York is safer today is because, 1.) violent crime took hold sooner here, and eventually burned out as New York City 2.) adopted better community policing and diverting resources to where crime was occurring. The trend across the country has been a downward one since the 1980s, in New York youth have more opportunities for diversion than gangs - their appeal dwindled with increased outreach and policing.

The NYPD officer had his own opinion about the outcome of Stop and Frisk being ruled unconstitutional. Unfortunately he has a pretty uneducated viewpoint of Chicago built on a stereotype. It speaks volumes to his outlook as an officer, if not poorly.

However the spokesperson for the Chicago PD should know better than to retort to a singular officer's off-hand comment from another department. These are playground antics, and Chicagoans are paying him to speak on behalf of the Chicago PD. He should know better.

Last I checked the Bronx and more specifially the South Bronx is still part of NYC, so you can probably shave at least 1.3 million off that number. You chose the income numbers as a comparison......How about we look at median house/condo values according to this website. Chicago's median property value is 261,000 and New York's is 517,000. NYC rent average is $200 more than in Chicago. The NYC cost of living is 161 and Chicago's is 108. So it costs a ton more to live in New York and therefore you must be someone who has more disposible income (read wealthier).

It's clear you don't understand the dynamics of NYC.

Oh angry New Yorker relax. There has certainly been a HUGE uptick in Chicago bashing since our president has been in office (as I'm sure any Chicagoan that pays attention to the news can tell you). And since Detroit's bankruptcy....the new popular contention is that Chicago will go the way of Detroit (it won't). Your Olympic bid piece was written in October of 2009, during Obama's 10 month of his first term. Regardless of your little history lesson, Chicago has absorbed a ton more body blows than it normally would since Obama took over in 2009. Analysis of New York's extreme decrease in crime over the last two decades seems to provide several different theories, but most of them focus on specific policing strategies that may or may not work in other areas of the country. I don't doubt that there are still some poor in NYC, but the fact is it has the largest number of millionaires and billionaires in the world. It has 3.5 times the amount of millionaires that Chicago has and only 3 times the amount of population. So to act like all this wealth doesn't play a role in the city being safer is ridiculous.

Never lived there, so I probably don't. Here is something though:
The U.S. Cities With the Most Leftover to Spend ... After Paying for Housing - Richard Florida - The Atlantic Cities

New York has the 8th highest amount of disposable income in the country. It really should be more like 5th because I'm sure that Durham, Huntsville, and Trenton are on this list because their rents are very low. So maybe you don't understand how wealthy NYC really is

I would agree Chicago went from a generally positive review before around 2009 and 2010 to HORRIBLE by 2012. The thing that got most people's attention in Chicago was that a ton of the publicity and things said were just off a bit or stretching the truth, but they were just plain lies and completely false. The right wing especially went off the radar in their "Chicago violent crime out of control" thing last year. People thought the city was under siege....because everyone kept telling them it was. Record high violence, never before seen murder rates, murder capital of America, highest murder rates in history..... All of it was pretty much BS and the murder rate instead crept up to where it had been 4 years earlier - and was STILL the 9th lowest count in over 50 years.

Of course this year it's way down and we hear NOTHING.

You can see how it's skewed though, as places like NYC and San Fran have a fairly decent amount of people making millions upon millions upon millions. The AVERAGE Joe Schmo in NYC doesn't make near the average salary of everyone. Certainly no one I know in NYC is in the running for the most money left over - and most of them are making around $100K!. Housing there sucks as far as cost.
