IMO Red Apple is very good. It's a buffet but the chow is fresh and tasty. I just asked my wife if she wants to go there tonight.

I seldom get to Superdawg because the Red Apple is right up the street and if I'm around there and hungry the Red Apple wins.

I've been to the one in Avondale. It's run-down and cramped -- you may not notice at first glance that the buffet table actually continues into a hallway leading to a back room -- but the main dishes are really good. Some of the desserts look a little scary though. Cake layered with Jell-O?? Uhm... Still though, overall it's well worth the 9 or 10 bucks for the lunch special. I don't know that I'd pay the $14 or so asking price for dinner. I hear the one up on the Chicago/Niles border is cleaner and more spacious but I've never been

Plates full of hearty meat & cabbage and a cold glass of Zywiec to wash it down is a hell of a combo. You won't find that extra touch at Golden Corral.

Dill pickle soup is pretty common at most Polish restaurant/buffets, but it's not always on the daily menu. Call ahead to find out when they feature it. Note that it commonly is refered to as cucumber soup at a lot of these places. Same soup, different name.

Podhalanka at Division and Ashland has it on the rotation. The old girl makes lots of wonderful soups.

To answer the original question: fast food chains almost always have identical, mass-produced prototype designs that they or their franchisees plop down, building, signs, furnishings, kitchen, and all, wherever they can find an appropriate "pad" of 0.5-2 acres. Those usually assume lots of parking, a drive through, etc., and you can't have those in the city -- first, because they're illegal, but second because the land is WAY too expensive. Since the chains operate on very tight margins, the cost of designing and building out a custom site isn't worth it.

Take a look at Culver's site requirements, for instance, and try to think of a single site within the city where you could build that.

There's a Jimmy Johns, a Potbelly, and a Chipotle in Wicker Park. That's all the chain restaurant action I'll ever need on a day to day basis.

Just ate at a restaurant that's better than Taco Bell! Their churros are awesome and they have a Taco Sandwich. See Taco John's They're in Rockford or Bourbonaise. I hope they get into Chicago!
