Actually, most cities do have a ''central point''; the problem in Chicago is that no one can agree as to what that it is.

The central part of Chicago is "The Loop". The city transit and streets are based on the Loop and two streets crossing inside the Loop.

Walk anywhere inside the Loop, bounded by the 'L' tracks and you are:

1. Jaded.
2. Unimpressed.
3. Underwhelmed.

...if you have been to places that are named "New York City, Hong Kong, Seoul, a few others etc."

I have never brought/escorted anyone here that hasn't expressed some sort of "Awe" once in the Loop... for whatever reason that "Awe" comes from.

My answer for the OP? The Loop. It's awesome... especially considering where it is geographically.

I'm just asking if there is a center point to the city, a hub where the city intersects and all the tourism/shopping/commerce centers around.
why do you think times square is the center of nyc???
why not the area around central park?
how about union square?
FiDi downtown?

I don't get it. First you said that anyone who has been to those other places is unimpressed and underwhelmed by the Loop. Then you said the Loop is awesome and everyone you've brought there expresses awe. Which is it? Or have you only brought people who haven't been to any of those other cities?

Read my quote, and understand my words:

I have never had visitors to my current apartment that have been to NYC or LA.

Read my words. I choose them carefully. If I choose them recklessly I'm just giving other posters rope. I would like to think of myself as a "rope salesman".

Keep that in mind the next time you post to me.

Ah, that explains it, which is why I asked. I'm not used to knowing many people who haven't been to those places. So when I hear someone say that visitors to the Loop are underwhelmed if they've been to those places, and presumably most people have been to those places, then that's the same as saying most people are underwhelmed by the Loop. That seemingly contradicted the rest of what you said. Make sense?

If Chicago is the first really large city the people you bring here have been to, then what you said makes sense. I had no way of knowing that, though.

Only tourists think Time Square is the center of NYC because it is the biggest tourist trap in the city. There is little to no need to go to that area unless you are going to do touristy things.

Exactly. I'd say the Chicago equivalent would be Navy Pier or possibly the Mag Mile.

Technically the Origin Point (Madison and State) is our central point, no?
