I am moving to Chicago this August for school but cannot afford dorms, so I am moving in with my friend in his place in Pilsen. I have heard good things and terrible things and I don't know who to believe, I am a little worried about gang violence. I am a white male(that may make me more of a target because of gentrification, but to be honest I am pro keeping the neighborhoods the way they are, culturally diverse) I really don't plan to be in the neighborhood that often, I work/go to school downtown, but I will check out the amazing little shops and local restaurants I hear about. My biggest worry is walking home for the train/bus to my apartment at night. I will live on W Cullerton and S wood near harrison park. Should I be worried? Any advice?
P.S. I looked on this thread before, but the only things I found about Pilsen were back in '08 and things may have changed for either better or worse.

As far as most people go, the city is the city. You have to be careful in any neighborhood.

Your certainly not in the best part of Pilsen, but IDK if I would worry. I'm a while male and lived a few blocks away from there and never had any issues with violence. In the summer on the weekend softball leagues play at Harrison park and it is getting more diverse on the east side spreading west.

Ditto. Young White, Asian and African-American women, actually, including single mothers of young children. As far as I can tell the gang violence rumors on the internet are just that. The CPD crime stats don't show there being any more murders there than anywhere else in the city. The entire District 12, of which Pilsen is a small part, has had one murder this year and had three all of last year.
