I was browsing google for inforation about Chicago and all I kept getting was "breaking news" shooting reports. So after reading a few pages about all these shootings and murders and how some of them were so blatant and reckless I just realized that considering it's 2011 and this stuff is still happening like it did back then. I know statistically it was much worse in the 80's and 90's but still it made me think.

I think the violence is out of control and I'm curious to hear what other people have to say about it.

Chicago still has a nagging crime problem, but it is very localized in certain neighborhoods. Downtown and the Northside are pretty safe. The West isn't so good and parts of the Southside are terrible. Although Chicago isn't nearly as dangerous as Detroit, the city seems to set its standards by comparing itself to New York City and Los Angeles, which are both significantly safer than Chicago, thus making Chicago look bad. It's really relative.

Detroit is considered worse because they have crim problems in ALL parts of their city. But I'm sure if you compared chicago worst areas with Detroit the difference wouldn't be that diffrent if not the same.

The downtown area of Detroit is relatively safe. Many if not most of the surrounding neighborhoods are pretty bad. Its worst neighborhoods are horrendous.

I think crime goes up when the economy gets bad. I think the shootings have gone on regardless and a lot of that is gangs. I think the recent flash mob stuff is linked to the economy. Lots of youths with nothing to do, nowhere to go, no jobs, or money or cell phones, or computers. That spells crime waiting to happen.

Also consider just how many people live in Chicago. A quick Google search revealed that the population is about 2.7 million. That's roughly the same number of people who live in Iowa. It's 5 times the population of Wyoming.

So the number of crimes may seem alarming, but the risk of being a victim of crime is not as much higher in Chicago as other places.

Good point... ...kinda. Chicago crime per capita is still high compared to your average small town, especially in the plains states.

But compared to other large, successful cities like Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Washington, and Philadelphia, Chicago is actually safer.

Because due to the population on the nice parts of town are low and the citys population is huge so that's why it says it is, but bad parts of Chicago currently I would say is worse then all of those citys.

Folks should consider that this is a thread from a poster with relatively few posts. The poster has threads about violence in a least four US cities and on the result of illegal immigration in the US.

So, it is very appropriate to ask the poster's intent, which has not yet been stated.
