Might be moving to Chatty soon? 3 main reasons: more job opportunities (grant writing), closer proximity to white water kayaking and climbing, and an attempt to experience the "big city."

I looked at Birmingham and it was great. Not too big, great restaurants and music scene, cool neighborhoods and bars, etc. But I like the location of Chattanooga better. Can I expect the same type of feel from Chattanooga?

What are some neighborhoods in Chattanooga that are close to everything. fun, and safe to live in? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Birmingham is a much bigger city than Chattanooga. Both have their positives and negatives. Chattanooga seems like a more family friendly city where Birmingham has a large population of young people as well as family neighborhoods. This has to do with 3 universities being in Birmingham and only one in Chattanooga. I would not say that the two have the same "feel" as having lived in both.

Chattanooga is definitely the right place for being near whitewater and other kayaking venues. Some may not know this, but for climbing Chattanooga has quite the reputation of being a top place here in the southeast. The Triple Crown Bouldering comp has a stop here in Chatt and the locals swear there are more boulders here than in Boulder, CO.

As for it being a big city, that depends on where one is coming from. For us it was moving to a small town, but if you come from a town of 30,000 people I'm sure it seems pretty big.

There are job opportunities in certain fields. I would think you may be able to find something in grant writing because of the number of non-profits here in the area, but definitely do your homework first!

The outlying areas have much to offer and will appeal to you based on what you're looking for.

In order to point you in the right direction for housing, we need to know what you are looking for. Single family home? Apartment? Most neighborhoods directly around downtown Chattanooga are not that great, unless you are right downtown, and that is very expensive. North Chattanooga, is a tad pricy, but is close to downtown and has gone through an urban renewal. Further out, East Brainerd and Ooltewah are very safe, but further from downtown. They are also closer to Ocoee, where you will do most of your white water rafting.

If he wants the Birmingham feel I would suggest NOT moving to Ooltewah. If you are looking for the Southside feel or Homewood feel North Chattanooga would be more along those lines.
