maybe its a sign the man in your life who takes
out the garbage should receive a tip!

When they learn how to shut the lid on my big garbage can when it is raining and pick up trash that they drop, I will learn how to leave them a tip. I am generally a good tipper, but I only tip generously when someone does their job thoroughly.

My garbage man stays in the truck and the truck itself lifts the can into the truck. Why would this deserve a tip if he doesn't even leave his seat?

I agree. Our garbage men don't leave the truck either. If I'm going to tip anyone it's going to be the guys with the recycle truck. They physically pick up the bin and sort the stuff out on the side of the truck.

Got home yesterday to find my roll-out bins laying in the neighbor's yard, as usual.

No tip...

Tipping garbage men, nah, not even the mailman. They get paid well. not below minimum wage like waitresses whose jobs really depend on tips. As on poster said they sit in the truck and it picks the garbage up and then the put the can back down with the lid off.

I like the lid off gives the can time to air out before I get home

hmmm I find this interesting as my husbands a garbage man. All I have say is that those who do tip we thank you. Yes my husband remembers those who gave/gives him tips on holidays so if and when they have large items out and they are not suppose to or whatever he does not ***** or not pick it up he does it even if hes not suppose to because he was treated kindly. I know alot might not think tipping is out of the question but they are truly thankful even if its homemade cookies the hubby brings home and our little ones go crazy over during the holidays. laughs..........My husband works long hrs yes getting in and out of the truck come rain, snow or 90 degrees hes out there busting his butt for you and trust me I have heard some stories of people just tossing trash in to there trash cans with no bags or bags so full that brake open..now come on I wouldnt expect anyone to pick up a mess from a tore bag or from trash not being properly tooken care of. Next I want to say that these workers are told just to take items that are in bags, there for if a animal got into it and made a mess they dont have time nor are they suppose to pick that mess up. However , if your good to your trash man they will try there best to take the time and be good to you.

My husband would flip if he read this thread, LOL. He is an ex-garbage man in a family full of lifelong "waste mgt" workers. Florida was huge on tipping them for the holidays and would average $2K-7K a year in tips depending on your route, but his area was also full of mostly NYers and northerners who tip more than average, I guess. When we moved here he was shocked with the $100 total he got over 2 years. Its a dirty job so tip your garbage man, will ya! LOL. They don't get paid nearly as much as your mailman does. A lot of people either taped it to the inside of the lid or gave it personally. If the garbage men are honest and not on their own route, most will give it to the guy whose route it is. You'd be amazed how much appreciation they have for nice and giving people. Most don't have working AC in the trucks and would love a cool bottle of water or a snack...but Florida was full of cookie-baking and candy-giving great-grandmas and grandpas too that longed for the weekly chat from the garbage man. Go figure.
