See post # 7 - CRock summed it up. Megalomaniac.

Sadly, some people in life, when they are unsuccessful in their chosen field, go into politics, where they can spread their dysfunction around so they affect more lives than they were able to in their former careers. Nutty, but true.

Not sure if you were serious or not, but this is exactly what this country needs. In fact, it is the only way we are going to be able to restore our precious Liberty in these troubling times.

I agree. My dad served in political office - General Assembly and also over a State gov't dept for a few years. I have run several political campaigns and know what it takes to get someone elected. And that is precisely why I can't see myself ever running for office . . . it takes $$ and a lot of people willing to back you w/ hard work - handing out literature, speaking on your behalf . . . plus engagements, lots of legwork for the candidate . . . and scrutiny that can often be quite mean-spirited. Sue Myrick went thru/ absolute HE$$ when she first ran for office - I was here and remember it well. Some people are willing to do/say/exaggerate/invent all sorts of ridiculous info to take down the opposition. You have to be willing to put up w/ a lot of crap if you decide to run for elected office.

However, I am not advocating that there should not be public scrutiny! It is a double edged sword. Good people can get slammed very badly if the opposition has a good political machine and is determined to smear a candidate. On the other hand, when someone has a dubious (or even faintly criminal!!!) past . . . that info needs to be in the public venue.

I bet there are a lot of people like me who are watching this guy very closely. I hope he is not able to slip into anything, but like you . . . wonder if he could win just by virtue of being a DEM and getting lucky w/ straight ticket votes.

Scary thought.

Jeeze..............
When I posted this this AM, the article said they "thought" he would run for Judge. In my zeal to post the info here I just scanned the article and posted he was running for Judge. My bad, sorry for the misinformation.

Here is the latest from the Observer:

Mackey files for
N.C. House seat 99
Parks Helms does not file; won't run for county commission

Charlotte attorney Nick Mackey filed today to run as a Democrat for N.C. House seat District 99, which covers northern Mecklenburg County and is currently occupied by Rep. Drew Saunders.

The two will meet in a primary May 6.

"My experience in running for sheriff has shown me there is a spirit in our community that longs for change from the status quo," Mackey said, reading from a prepared statement. He declined to answer any questions.

Longtime county commissioner Parks Helms did not file for re-election. Helms had said earlier this month that his wife was asking that he not run again.

Mackey ran in a special Democratic election in December to fill the vacancy for Mecklenburg County sheriff. He won, but state party officials later nullified the election, ruling that precincts had been improperly organized.

County commissioners then appointed the man Mackey defeated, Chipp Bailey.

Mackey ran for District Court judge in 2006 and finished fourth in a four-person field.

I have no problem with this guy running for office; however, he now has to open his personal and personnel records for evaluation. As long as he follows the correct process, then nothing is off limits.
