Hi,

My parents are looking to move to the Charlotte area from the NY area. They are looking for a quaint town (think cute Main St and cafes and boutiques), but they are looking for a house with acreage and lots of trees. They are also up for a town over the border in SC.

My father got a building contractor job down there, so he doesn't have to travel into Charlotte all the time, but they wanted to be close enough that they could go into the city every once in a while.

School systems aren't important to them as we're all grown. Low crime is important. Interesting things to do in the area would be great too. And they are looking for a place where there aren't trailer parks all over the place. A realtor down there said "well then you shouldn't look in NC." But I don't think that's true. There has to be a quaint town around Charlotte that will meet my parents needs and expectations.

My father also loves to get involved in local politics, as he's a councilman and Fire and Police Commissioner in our town up north, and my mother loves interior design.

Can you think of any towns that would be a good fit for my parents? Thank you very much in advance!!!

I live near the Belmont area, so think they would like Belmont. Also try McAdenville (the whole town is lit up for Christmas, therefore it's known as Christmastown) and Mt. Holly....they're in NC, just west of Charlotte. Lots of nice little "Main Street" areas; people are friendly and lots of family activities around there during the summertime.

These towns are just off I-85.

Heard that Ft. Mill and Rock Hill, SC is nice, too.

Oh, and low taxes are a consideration too...as far a home, they can spend up to 500K for the right home with the right land. Land is key.

To show you what they're looking for as far as type of house (but in a different town), click here: Allen Tate Family of Companies (http://www.allentate.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?pageid=11&pagealias=ListingDet ail&ListingID=1094113 - broken link)

Thank you again for all of your help!

That amount of money will go far out in the countryside of Gaston County or in York County, SC. I do think you want to see what's available in Clover for sure.

Well they both went to the see the house yesterday and loved it and then they drove over to the other side of the mountain next to the property and said it was all trailer parks. I guess they're not too keen on trailer parks as neighbors.

Here's the thing - you have to tell them to get over that, seriously. This is the way things are in rural communities in the south. Even in some of Union counties most expensive neighborhoods you still have to pass trailer homes or delapidated farm houses to get in and out of your neighborhood. The lack of zoning is considered a good thing by the natives who detest big government. They will NOT escape these kinds of neighbors if they really want to buy acreage. Hate to see them pass up a house they really love out of ignorance that they will find other areas where things will be different.

My mother, who is the one who has to fall in love with the town, is kind of a Martha Stewart type. She loves towns like Burlington, VT - Nantucket, MA - Savannah, GA - Charleston, SC - those types of quaint, historic, full-of-charm towns. She loves the picturesque Norman Rockwell-like towns. Hopefully that will help you in recommending a perfect town for my parents. Thanks again!

That's true! It's very spotty wherever you go, especially in the smaller towns. Check the police blotters in the town they're intersted in. I live in a decent neighborhood, but next neighborhood is trailer parks. No one has ever bothered us, nor crimes reported. Plus it helps to have a supportive comminity watch, too...where everyone looks out for everybody. Plus, acerage is a plus!
