Why NC? If you don't know much about the area, you're coming with only 1 job and you most likely won't be able to visit - what is bringing you here? My husband has been there before and liked the area, its closer to his daughter who lives in MD and we drive to pick up every year. Its also more affordable then MD. We did look at VA, not sure about that though. My mother wants to retire in NC. I really want to live someplace other than FL. Been here 33 years and feel like making a change. Everyone always talks about how nice NC is. I visited with my family like 13 years ago and stayed in the mountains it was beautiful. Im scared to go any farther north as i have only seen snow once for like 10 minutes

The rental listings are very deceiving. You will find what looks like a nice, newer neighborhood, but in reality, it is a section 8 neighborhood with high crime within Charlotte.
- thats what im afraid of.

Also the job market is so deflated in Florida. He is working now, but making 1/2 what he should. Although I do know its bad everywhere, the statistics I have read show FL, is so much worse then NC. Would anyone agree?

It would be a long commute if he works in Charlotte and you live in Statesville.
I think Mooresville/Huntersville would be good areas to check out.
Mooresville is in Iredell county-state schools will either be Iredell/Statesville school systems or Mooresville city schools depending on where you were living. The IS schools in Mooresville are generally better than those in Statesville.
As a general rule 28117 ZIP is IS schools and 28115 is Mooresville city, although there is a band of homes within a few subdivisionsjust literally to the East of I77 that are 28117 but feed into the city schools- Reed Creek is one of them.
Again, as a general rule ,28115 pays city and county taxes whereas most of 28117 pays only County, although there are a few 28117 SDs that may be your price range that are city-eg Morrison plantation, Wateroak, Wyndham shores.
Our son is a Junior at Lake Norman High and is happy and doing well.

Huntersville is closer to Charlotte and in Mecklenburg county, so considerably higher taxes than Iredell.
Here are some examples of what your $$$ might get you in 28117
this is 2200 sq ft
Moderator cut: no real estate links

Has pool, tennis courts and walking trails, plus walk to stores/YMCA/kiddies park etc etc. Lake Norman schools
In 28115
Moderator cut: no real estate links
2,300 sq ft
Nice area with bigger lots- Mooresville city schools. Close to the golf course and what will be the new I77 exit.

Doesn't seem to be that many out there.
Others are either town/cluster homes.

I think you're going to struggle with your requirements of a new/updated home in a good school area.

More available in Huntersville, but not in your price point.

ADDITION
Just found this-kind of between Davidson and Mooresville- sort of out in the country, but there is a new shopping center there with a Food Lion grocery etc
Moderator cut: no real estate links

and this on Lake Davidson which is a land locked lake next to Lake Norman.
This is a nice SD IMO, we drove in the other day and there were families strolling back from the lake/pool etc.
Nice feel and the homes, whilst on small lots are not cooky cutter and have the nice balconies etc.
Moderator cut: no real estate links

Depending on the salary it is possible to live with 1 job.
We do and quite comfortably too.

Great feedback, thanks! So in your opinion what im after with price and area would more likely be an older home then?

Agreed we were doing it for quite a while here too. We are ready for 2 incomes again though, so hopefully it wont be a struggle for long.

Do Charter schools have things just like the public schools do?

I understand what everyone is saying and I think I would prefer a cute 3 bedroom in a safe area with a good school system. We can always move in the future to a bigger home. I think the area is the most important. I do not want to switch my son from school again after moving because we end up in a bad part of the town. I do have a few friends in NC who said they would ty to help too. I think narrowing it down is a great idea.

Im going to start focusing on schools and go from there. We pay $1100 here in FL and id rather not move and pay more, not right away.
Most charter school that have been up and running awhile have sports and classes for higher level students. THe extent to which these things are offered vary by school. You have charter schools in Charlotte, Davidson, Huntersville, Mint Hill, Lincolnton, etc. that are fairly well established.

Charter school are free...no tuition.

You apply by lottery the year before you hope to enter (i.e. you would apply by Dec/Jan or 2011-12 school year to get in for the 2012-13 school year). Most lotteries are quite competitive. Do not count on getting in...not at all. Throw you name in that hat and if you get in, consider accepting it...but PLAN on your local public school (unless private is an option).

Contact the schools directly. Google Charter Schools and NC and you can get to a State list of schools. Some that come to mind are Lincoln Charter and Lake Norman Charter if you are going to live in the 28214 or 28216 zip code. But there are many, many more. Queens Grant and Davidson Community School are well thought of also. Not sure which of these has football. The school are very different and have some type of 'theme'...traditional, 'child centered', 'leadership based', etc. Some have uniforms, some are earthy. You will have to investigate and decide which type would suit your child.

I'd love an update! Did you find a place? We are thinking of moving to NC, somewhere near Charlotte and I am looking for all of the same things. Great schools, safe area...Any suggestions?

Hi Jules,

Info ive collected on the Good:

South side of Charlotte: Union Co, Concord, Harrisburg, Kannapolis (all in Cabarrus Co).
North side (Huntersville, Davidson, Cornelius, Highland Creek) and Mooresville (southern Iredell Co)

I hear - Stay away from: East Charlotte, West Charlotte, University City, Gastonia (all "Hoods")

I am leaning towards Moorseville closer to the lake or huntersville. It will all depend on budget and whats availble at the time im ready to move.
