Our retirement housing interest is in Del Webb Cane Bay. However Summerville is a not an appealing place to live--typical old junky roads, buildings, etc. Yet Charleston, 30 miles away, is the appeal aesthetically and for family. We prefer Bluffton/Hilton Head Del Webb The Haven, 90 miles away, for general ambiance and proximity to the beach. Can anyone offer a reason to move to Summerville?

Your interests are in Cane Bay, but you prefer the Bluffton area. It sounds like you have already made up your mind. Why would you even want anyone to try to 'sell you' on Summerville?
It seems like you are trying to focus only on the negative. Summerville certainly isn't Utopia, but has a lot going for it.
Do yourself a favor, do NOT settle in a place you don't care for, you will NEVER like it. You will make yourself and those around you miserable...I've seen it happen.
Thanks for your reply, but no help. We are interested in Del Webb Cane Bay age-restricted devel. But Summerville is a turnoff, unless someone can come up with good reasons to live in the area other than it is 30 miles from C'ston Marketplace.
You are better off moving to Sun City. Much nicer retirement area with more amenities than the Summerville version. Del Webb Summerville is in the middle of nowhere. We were not impressed. Sun City is right near the bustle of fast growing Bluffton and Hilton Head. That would be my recommendation.

People move to Summerville because they love the area, not because someone blogged about it. Its all personal taste and preference. You mentioned 30 miles from the Market. Realistically how many times are you going to visit that place? 1 , 2, 3 times a year? Its a tourist trap to begin with! While its relatively quite around this area now, thats going to change. The construction has resumed and there long-term goals will make this one of the most desirable places to live. Cane Bay already has outsold other markets three years running. Ultimately you're going to do what you'd like...
As a long time Summerville resident, I am not sure of what part of Summerville turned you off but if you are not happy there look elsewhere, not going to bed you to be my neighbor if you don't like it here.....
I agree with the other posters. If you don't like Summerville, for whatever reasons--if it just doesn't feel like "home" to you--then keep looking until you do find that place that feels right. To be asked to be talked into it is silly. Also, Summerville is IMO far enough from downtown Charleston that you wouldn't go that frequently.
Actually, Del Webb is closer to the center of Moncks Corner. Heck, I don't like the area of *Summerville* where Del Webb is located either! That is NOT the Summerville that the rest of us love. It is the mailing address the marketing team desired, over Moncks Corner or Goose Creek. Apparently, some people find Summerville desirable...
Just for the record, we almost bought there too because it was the closest age restricted community to where we lived. We didn't want to spend 6 months building and found another 55+ community within walking distance of Flowertown...the REAL Summerville.
If you want a great road system and shiny new buildings, try the greater Phoenix area...
Perhaps you might want to try asking people in the retirement community you are looking into what their thoughts are, as the questions you might need answered may pertain more to that audience as opposed to this one. They are all very helpful and knowledgable, but I am not sure what the retiree from another state ration is on this board.
A good reason to move to Summerville is the people of Summerville. Some how the people of Summerville make you feel welcome. Downtown Summerville is the place to be around Christmas, they always decorate it beautifully. The Flowertown Festival is always great. The choice in restaurants is great, plus the fact that you would rarely need to go to the larger city is also a plus, when I lived in Summerville I was praying for a Bestbuy.
