None of those places are comparable to the U.S. either. I also don't see why you feel slighted by my comment. Consider for a moment that you were ruminating on the idea that an ominous government presence could help affect change by forcibly displacing part of California's population. That's not extreme to you?

It's not 1918 anymore.
The person who wrote this isn't up to speed on what a safe school reopening looks like. I've shared the specific plan for SDUSD. It's not simply to open the doors and return as normal, quite the opposite in fact. So regardless of what Howard Markel says, he's wrong. Not only is that system not dismantled, it's being greatly improved upon with standards and input from a 21st century perspective.

Also, I think some school classrooms should be used for older students who can walk to school and use neighborhood-vicinity learning pods for others. Avoid busing as much as possible.
Only 20% of those cases were in children. That data speaks for itself when you consider that at least 90% of the people in a child care center ARE children, yet 80% of the reported cases are in adults!

Being old and overweight are risk factors. Transmission is mostly indoors.

Playgrounds, schools, and sports fields are closed. Restaurants and indoor workplaces are open.

How is this "science-based" again?

Indoor restaurants are closed. Workplaces--apparently not yours, from what you've said--are supposed to be practicing social distancing and enforcing masks. There's plenty of science behind this; it's just that people are not following the guidelines.

I'm not slighted. The inaccurate things you say aren't personal. Continuing with that, Singapore might not be dissimilar to urban California. It's technically democratic. The harsh justice system, race and language make people think of it as very foreign. Metropolitan California areas have some Asian districts.... Anyway, "extreme" has a negative connotation, but this time around, it might be a good thing. Desperate times, desperate measures.

Trump’s mantra ... (except with regard to CV19, of course)

Not for long. With Federal unemployment is over and highly unlikely to be much if it gets renewed, soon governor/mayor will be forced to reopen the business if they want their citizens to be able to afford rent, food etc.

Like Sweden did?

In April, the Swedish ambassador boasted that Stockholm might achieve herd immunity by the end of May.

That never happened, Sridhar says. “Sweden is stuck at 6% for months now,” she says, in reference to the percentage of residents who have antibodies to the coronavirus. Meanwhile, the country has suffered economic devastation and far higher death rates than its Nordic neighbors.
