Fontucky, the idea is to farrierer until you meet a cute wranglerette, then marry her and raise horses, but yes, there are old farriers, read the article.
Or you can be like Monte and be a farrier who starts a country music band.

Gee now I feel old, its closing in on 4 decades since the first time I danced western swing at one of Monte's performances.

And as long as Fontucky survives, so, too, will SoCal!

California to me is more about surfing than it is horses.

After I moved there and took up surfing, I picked up a copy of an old surfing guide to SoCal that was published sometime around the 1960s. Excitedly started planning my surf exploration up the coast. Couldn't wait to paddle into the huge glossy wave at Dana Point. Was more than a little disappointed to arrive at DP only to find it since dredged and in use as a parking lot for boats. And other beaches in that area were no longer even publicly available.

There are still some magical surf spots, and surfing-oriented communities left -- or at least were, when I last lived in SD -- I hope the few remaining ones can appreciate and hang on to their unique character. Because once it's gone, it doesn't come back.

Jeeze, they started construction on DP harbor in 1967. You were in a time warp with that old publication. Hey, did you hear that Cotton's Point is closed for surfing now? President Nixon bought the old Cotton estate and established the Western White House there. You might be able to spot him walking on the beach in his suit, tie and wingtip shoes.

Well, I've heard of the Dead Poets Society but the Dead Presidents Society?

There are a lot of very horsey areas in California. Probably more than most so-called "rural" states.

Surfing is more or less a working-class/middle-class thing, all it takes is a surf board and some free time (similarly for skateboarding). Horses are primarily an upper-middle class/rich snob thing, it takes considerable resources to maintain the horses, have room for them, etc. Horses are just one of the many ways the wealthy display their status. In terms of function they are entirely outdated and useless.
