When I said "some random person from California" I wasn't referring to you, I was referring to some random person from LA or something, because, frankly why would they care what the difference between Maryland and Massachusetts is? Or why would they care or know anything about New England unless they have ties with it or have extensively traveled there?

That's why when you said Boston was a forgettable city, I knew some of the posters on this forum would drag you for it, even though what you said wasn't that crazy or controversial. I just don't think Boston's identity outside of sports and history is that ingrained in the average person's mind.
I mean sure if you exclude the things a city is famous for it’s not famous.

It’s not like your average person on the East coast could tell you a whole lot about LA beyond traffic, Warm, Hollywood.

Not sure how that’s different than Harvard, Chowder, Paul Revere, Red Sox.

Same Philly is like Liberty Bell, Hooligans, Cheesesteak, grime

Chicago is El, Hot Dog, tall buildings, Lake

Boston is about as forgettable as any major city. It’s kind of odd to single it out

NY, LA, CHI, DC, Miami, SF, Detroit

the ones about equal
Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Phoenix, Philadelphia

The one less memorable:
Riverside-San Bernardino

I agree that this would likely be the opinion of the masses, with the exception of Detroit.

Detroit is memorable in that it was once a powerhouse city, and has become a mere shell of itself. The urban decay and vastness of its poverty is definitely something that sticks with you. But a visit to Detroit is about as forgettable as any major city in North America, otherwise.

Ok ther than maybe Cleveland, the blight is a very distinctive feature of Detroit.

The quite obvious monuments to its decline are its memorable features

It’s actually kind of weird if you think about it, the Midwest doesn’t have a much worse reputation for racism since white flight was much much worse than anywhere else

This article won't help Boston's reputation.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/...celtics-career

Does feel like the city is disproportionately reported on wrt player mistreatment/discrimination. I guess Lions fans cyber harassing a players wife won't generate as much clicks?

...Or Jazz fans being racist:

Could also be a smidge of anti-boston bias coming out of NYC where ESPN, CBS Sports, and Bleacher Report are stationed.

When you eliminate New Hampshire that goes over 11%

The Boston Metro Division (The southern half of the metro, including Suffolk Norfolk and Plymouth Counties) is 16.7% Black in the most inclusive terms. 340,970 identifying as black out of 2,040,652 https://data.census.gov/table?g=323X...T5Y2021.B02001

^This essentially is the same breakdown as the Milwaukee MSA. In comparison, Toronto is about 9.6% Black for its 2,794,356 people.... 265,005.

A lot of it stems from the fact that Black people in Bosotn are generally:

Children of Immigrants (not much ties to the south)
Immigrants (not much ties to anywhere here)
Speak a language other than English
Never Leave Boston (very very common)
Highly Professional or Academic (thus run in small circles, and not terribly influential in culture)
Looking to Move
Hispanic (often not considered black)
Cape Verdean (generally confusing to Black people not from Boston)

Even with the more conservative measure- There are many places with less than 364k blacks that are not considered hostile to black people or move without a negative reputation, or that have more room in that black cognizant.
point taken but generally speak most black folks wouldn't include Hispanics as "black" (for reasons we both are aware of)

Boston is probably the biggest metro that has a generally negative rep among black americans still. and for the reasons you listed it probably won't change

the big difference between boston and places in the deep south is familial ties. t he lack of that def hurts boston's rep

Philly is interesting because they have a lot of pride but not to the point of looking down at other cities besides Pittsburgh. They have the ego but still see themselves as the underdog whereas Boston and obviously NYC don't see themselves that way

Will the article honestly hurt Boston? I think at this point, Boston’s racism can’t get any worse in terms of media driven perception, it’s basically immune to racist criticism in the media. For Boston to be viewed any worse than it currently is, Boston would have to do some racial expulsion or something of that nature.

Y’all assumed he got racial death threats- that’s insane. But yea it highlights my point. People assume the absolute worst, even when things are welll documented like
