Connie Willis
Especially enjoyed her Doomsday Book, but she has written many good ones
Ray Bradbury
Love his short stories: The Illustrated Man collection, I Sing the Body Electric, and many others--probably my favorite collection is The October Country.
Mary Stewart
Probably my favorite Arthurian author, love her Merlin series.
She really paints a picture, recreates a time as it might have been.
Those are just a few of my faves. Don't want to overwhelm y'all.
Anyone else out there enjoy fantasy or science fiction?
I have never been able to get into Ray Bradbury and despite my efforts do not get Tolkien either ( I can't say that too loud in Oxford as we go to the pub he used to frequent regularly and where many fans hovering in awe). I do like Tom Holt which is fantasy for the fantasy challenged basically and very humorous !
I have enjoyed Mary Stewart's Merlin books as she does really bring the past to life and quite enjoyed Marion Zimmer Bradley's Avalon series too.
My partner loves terry Pratchett but once again not really my thing and he loves "Dune" ( Frank Herbert) also unfathomable to me !
I love Jules Verne's books and remember my grand-mother telling me how she used to think that going to the moon was utter fantasy when she was little ( in the early 30s). I think he was an author much before his time and has a way to see into the future so to speak.
I'll bear in mind Connie Willis though as you have impeccable taste.

Moose, I have to say I too was underwhelmed with Tolkien.
The guy was rather long-winded.
Try The Doomsday Book, it might work for you.
It takes place in Oxford!

As a trekkie I highly recommend the book "Federation". A great well thought out novel (no it's not Jim Kirk-esque). It's written for adults, it's a bit gritty in some parts, and you start thinking "yeah I could see that happening".
Anyway I read it about 10 years ago and re-read it recently. Thumbs up.
A partial list of author's I have enjoyed over the years:
Isaac Asimov
Gordon R. Dickson
Juanita Coulson
Warren Norwood
James P. Hogan
Orson Scott Card
C. J. Cherryh
Larry Niven
Frederick Pohl
Pohl Anderson
Arthur C. Clark
Anne McCaffery
Greg Bear
Phillip Jose Farmer
Gregory Benford
I can guarantee you I missed a bunch. I'll look around and add some.
I have enjoyed almost all of the authors you listed, but I think my favorite of the bunch was Gordon Dickson; I really liked his Dragon Knight series, where the regular guy was transported to the middle ages.
I have enjoyed Roger Zelazny's Amber series as well, and some of Ursula Leguin.

Love the lists posted so far.
