Suspect gets a thumbs-up from me too; if you've never read anything else by Robert Crais, the Elvis Cole novels are a good place to go from here. Like James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux, Elvis keeps a very "maculate" cat; -- (or maybe the cat keeps him).
My other choice would be "The Dog Who Wouldn't Be" by Farley Mowat, who left us just a few weeks ago. After over forty years, I can still recall the final line:
“And so the pact of timelessness between us was broken and I went from him into the darkening tunnel of the years.”
