To me, both Seabiscuit and Watership Down are modern classics.
They are way, way up there.
I also enjoyed Charlotte's Web, The Cricket in Times Square, Winnie the Pooh, and The Black Stallion series.
Wind in the Willows
Ring of Bright Water
Tarka the Otter
Watership Down
Animal Farm
White Fang
Call of the Wild
Jonathan Livingstone
Winnie the Pooh
Diary of a Wombat ( I love reading it to my small neighbours)
Little Beaver and the Echo ( same as above)
Hippos go Beserk ( same as above)
The Tale of Despereaux ( same as above)
"Chocolate"
Moby Dick ( sort of a main character)
All those great books mentioned here, but add "Redwall" by Brian Jacques,
and the rest of the dozens of books in his series.
They are wonderful!
