To me, both Seabiscuit and Watership Down are modern classics.
They are way, way up there.
I also enjoyed Charlotte's Web, The Cricket in Times Square, Winnie the Pooh, and The Black Stallion series.

My all-time favorite, and it really is great literature, is the collected works of Walt Kelly's "Pogo". They were all animals.

All those great books mentioned here, but add
"Redwall" by Brian Jacques,
and the rest of the dozens of books in his series.
They are wonderful!
