The term I prefer is 'deft and acrobatic.' All kidding aside, it's a phenomenon that becomes even more stark when you get outside the region.

Once when we were on a trip to the PNW, we picked up the rental car at the airport and started driving down the interstate Alabama style. I couldn't figure out why people were driving the speed limit. That's supposed to be a suggestion only. My wife says, "Ummmm, MiniVan, I think people take it seriously here." So I slowed down and became a sheep like the rest of them, bleating my way up to Anacortes.

Although if there's an a-hole on the road in Birmingham, I'll lay even odds that it's someone with a Barber Motorsports license plate.

The main thing I've noticed driving through Birmingham is there are always a few who like to essentially race, swerving in and out of traffic at high speed, and of course, not using a signal when changing lanes. A few bad can go a long way to poisoning the whole lot. Other than those few, going through B'ham is a breeze.

Definitely. Just look at the names of people who are involved (sure there are more). Finger crossed this initative spread across other low income areas. Good deed, indeed

Hopefully the Food Corp. program will be a similar path that the Promise program has been by providing healthy food options by creating these markets throughout the city since supermarkets are hesitate to setup stores in the lower income areas.

Nice article, highlighting the continued movement of capital and companies into the market. A bit boosterish but, hey, why the hell not?

Very cool. As an aside, I wish Birmingham could maintain its city parks better overall. We did a kids' scavenger hunt in three parks (Rushton, George Ward, and Vulcan Trail) last weekend with our granddaughter. This was a nice event put on by the Birmingham Children's Theater. But all three locations certainly could use some sprucing!

The Park and Rec board has been closed because of covid. They recently just reopened operations. Birmingham has 118 city parks. They normally beautify a lot of them from time to time. A few of them, residents do some upkeeping to them as well.
