Some lock their gates when they are done going in and out for the day. In other words, having a locked gate does not indicate someone is not home, it just means they are not planning on opening up the gate soon.

Default A Locked Gate - Lost in Hawaii

Sure, but a locked gate in the middle of the day CAN really mean "I am not home and wanted to secure my premises." As for the "bad dog", I wish to make really really clear, I know of very large dogs around certain properties that have been so terrorized by "the bad guys" that they basically bark a little and then run away if not chained or else that, they cower in the farthest corner that their "chain" will permit. One way to test this theory of mine, on your own dog, is to have a tough intruder who is your friend but a stranger to your dog come on to the property and test a few traits when you are not there and to tell you what he witnessed your dog do or not do. I know for fact, that the really bad guys have really bad dogs to protect them from those who might want their stuff back.

Also, that we are not accepting visitors at the moment.

Yes, but then you have to totally pretend you did not hear the calling of "Auntyyyyyyy" and "Unclllllllllllllle" from outside the gate.

We keep our gate closed always whether we're home or not. Dropping by without calling first is considered rude.

I watched, recently, an episode of Antiques Road Show that was filmed in Hawaii and there was a young fellow there who I thought was giving gang signs on tv. It surprised me, and I hope I was mistaken.
