I agree this price doesn't include the water pump. However from what I know of this engine the water pump seems to last (but you never know and is worth replacing), but his bigger problem are the camshaft seals which are notorious for going bad. IMO there is a greater than 50% chance his t-belt is covered in oil

The 3S-FE is also notorious for building up sludge in the upper cam cover areas, sometimes this defeats the crankcase ventilation and helps encourage oil leakage.

I didn't know this motor was prone to camshaft seal leaks, thanks for the info. My *usual* approach is to leave oil seals alone unless they look like they are "going".

I have seen the oil pump cover gasket start leaking on these engines, you have to take the timing belt off to get at this. Never mind how I know this...

I had a Celica GT with an early 3S-FE, Mitch is correct there is only one belt driven cam. Mine leaked from the cam seal like a ****, but I never bothered fixing it cuz the car was a total beater and had many other problems as well. It also had a problem with oil getting into the distributor and wreaking all sorts of hell on the electronics. A lot of people seem to have EFI problems with these, in both the Celica and Camry....honestly not such a great motor, IMO.

Yeah, I have the oil in the distributor, drilled a little hole in the dist. cap to let it out, turns out the dist. is very hard to disassemble and replace that seal, Toyota does not sell component parts for the distributor - I guess I will have to buy a reman.

The dist. is leaking oil out onto the transmission, making a mess but at least gets the oil out of the dist. cap.

So far no problem with the cam oil seal but glad you guys brought it up.

I think he joined the French Foreign Legion, and will be back in 5 years to kick our collective butts...
