My sis has owned a Buick Century 1992 since new, had few problems with this Mexican-assembled car. She does not drive it that much and is not at all hard on a car though.

Maybe they did better work in Mexico back in the early 90s.

Looking at Wikipedia, I think this car has the 3300 V-6 - I know it's a transverse V-6 of some sort, she has not had any particular problems with it, I know the 3800 has intake manifold issues, maybe this one has an aluminum intake?

My two German cars have been the most reliable and trouble free cars I have ever owned. Way better than any of the American cars I have owned. And, MUCH more fun to drive!

Typically, German cars run fine after a year or two into the model these days.

The cost of maintenance is a bit higher, which adds to the reputation, but the car runs fine, it just costs a bit more to keep it that way.

Some years back I did have a VIP tour of the VW plant in Puebla Mexico.

I saw the chassis coming into the door and the complete assemblyline all the way to a car being dyno'd out the door and to the parking lot.

Visited the stamping bldg where fenders and hoods etc were punched out...spot paint room...Quality control on a completed car checked etc.

Very efficient assembly so would imagine that Ford or GM there would be doing the same.

Why not let the free market work and buy the best available vehicle regardless of where it is built?

This will promote competition and force the car companies to build the best vehicle for the best price.

Mine was fine for the 48,000 miles I owned it. Not a single issue...ever...until my daughter totaled it. Replaced it with a Mexican made New Beetle which has also been problem free. It originally replaced a Honda Odyssey that LIVED at the dealer, which taught me that buying Japanese quality, built by American workers was...just like any other car...a crap shoot.

There's nothing you can buy today that's a product of just one place (I actually tried to think of something and then I remembered that the old guy making wood carvings out of trees from his yard is probably using German tools).

I am okay with buying a car made in Mexico (in fact I bought a Nissan which was made there).

I will not buy an HHR because its UGLY!

No I would not buy an HHR....they're not attractive. And being that they're "hecho en mehico" by the newer GM, I'm sure there's some quality issues that lie ahead.

i'd rather buy a car from mexico than from china. i just rented an hhr for the weekend. before i chose that car i jumped into a pontiac vibe and there was a label across the drivers door MADE IN CHINA.

no thanks. china owns us and they're cruel to people and animals. i'm not crazy about mexico either, but better than china.
