If I were to take a old car on a long trip I'd make sure all the hoses and belts are in good shape. Properly inflated tires, good spare and you have what you need to put it on.
I do that for my daily drivers anyway. Whether new or old.
We leave in Southern CA, a 9.0 quake might hit any moment, so better be prepared.
Type of car terrain and maintanence history does though. I just took my new to me car from buffalo to reading and then went to allen town to check it out before visiting my brother back in reading pa and back. That was around 1K on my car the trans was slipping because I bought the car a chrysler 300S used and come to find out no one changed the rear diff fluid or gave some TLC to this car like I did.
Needless to say the windy hilly roads of pa while manage able were quite steep on my way back home from my trip about 60 miles away my car had the abs light turn on it drove like poo got it diagnosed at my next service for changing the rear diff fluid. It was a wiring harness in the back passenger wheel what they call a speed sensor. Funny part is my family was cussing me out because I went to the dealer to get it dxed and fixed. I always go to the dealer for repair work and get oem parts. The reason for this is I went to get some brakes and pads thrown on from where i bought it from and they used cheap ass materials so my brakes started squeaking at like 500 miles after the install of new pads and rotors. Next monty I am having the front diff fluid changed. Because even though the previous owners did oil changes they did nothing else to it so I have gotten it to ride pretty much perfect from doing some TLC about 1-2K in maintanence and a new full set of decent tires. Very fun to drive now amd my family is like why do you drive so much? My answer is because there is such low miles on the car i just hit 50K yesterday bought it with 42K on the odom. And it is smooth like butter on the road when I see my grandma she offers to let me drive her car a camry the ride is super rough and it has high miles i politely decline her. My brother looks at me like I am crazy but he knows that it is a nice car I let him drive it when i visit and he drives like a race car driver. In sport mode
I drove my 2010 335d with over 160k miles on it for a +2,000 miles fun trip in 7 days - no problem.
Drives and feels better than new (it is tuned, so it has over 550lb-ft & 500HP with an average of 38 MPG)!
Depends completely and totally on the car, and how it has been maintained.
This. If I didn't know how well the previous owners (if any) had maintained it, then I would be unsure how trustworthy a higher mileage vehicle would perform.
Just got back from a 4,000 mile trip the car is my 16 year old daily driver.

Just got back from a 4,000 trip. The car is my 16 year old daily driver bought from a local dealer new. The car is a 5 speed manual Toyota Corolla. I have the maintenance I have preformed personally over the years on the City-data Toyota page under the heading (Toyota review). The car has 230,000 plus miles and it averaged 38 miles per gallon on the trip. The car still runs like new.
Below is a picture you don't see ever day where I'm from in sunny Florida. The picture was taken in northern Illinois 1,300 miles from home
just want to see what each person thinks/votes. 6 hours/360 miles or more road trip, where if something happens, your totally screwed.
I have personally drove cross country (3000 miles) on a car that has close to 200k, and yes, at some point i was scared that i might break down, and there is no reception, total darkness.
me personally right now, i would not drive 6 hours one way if the car had more than 175k.
The mileage on the vehicle is irrelevant, if the engine runs at normal temperature and no blue or brown smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe, the transmission (manual or automatic) shifts without any problems, and the steering and brakes work, then I'm good to go.
