Was talking to a Minnesota State Highway Patrolman today during a break at a safety meeting. He was saying that when Herb Brooks (Miracle on Ice coach) died in a car accident in Forest Lake, MN he was not wearing his seatbelt.
He fell asleep behind the wheel on the freeway, drifted into the ditch and then panicked and over-corrected and rolled the van. He was thrown to the other side of the van. The van rolled twice and ended up sitting on it's tires in the ditch. Only problem the roof caved in and crushed Herb's chest.
If he would have worn a seatbelt he would have opened the driver's door and walked away as the driver's side was not damaged.
Sometimes I dont when Im not in a high speed area. I have stomach problems, and Im often in pain, and the pressure from the belt is sometimes too horrible to take.
I sometimes do not think of it. When the buzzer howls, I put it on. Sometimes they chafe my wifes neck. She is shortish and the shoulder belt does not go across her shoulder. She just uses the lap belt at times and pushes the shoulder part down under her arm.
My kids are really really good about belts. They always remind us if we forget.
As a driver, almost never. As a passenger, it depends on who I'm with. I have my own versions of the reasons already listed. Plus, it's not the government's place to tell me how to protect myself. The same goes for motorcycle helmets, although I usually wear one when I ride.
Yeah, I drive with people who don't. Once I got in and was the only in the car with a seat belt on... that's four adults in the early 20 to late 20 range.
I tend to agree, it's none of the governments business. With the stipulation that if you get in a car accident with no seat belt on, you should be the one paying any medical bills. It's gross negligence not to wear one, and society or your insurance shouldn't be on the hook for stupid.
I feel strangely naked without it.
Even in the back seat.
Me too, although I don't think it's that strange. I feel it holds me in place a bit. The few times in memory (not too recent) that I can remember driving or riding without a belt I feel like I'm going all over the place. Don't like that.
That said, I don't necessarily think they should be required by law. People want to kill themselves, hey, be my guest. Just like the helmet laws. Why are they repealing helmet laws now but leaving seat belt laws in place? That doesn't make any sense. If motorcycle riders can make that choice, car drivers and passengers should also be able to make that choice.
It all depends. If you value your life wear a seat belt. If you place no value on your life then who cares?
