Yep, don't think I will be hurt at that speed.

sj08054, Not arguing, but no one should be able to make me be safe if I dont want to. Again, I wear a seatbelt and have no problem with it. Just dont think this is an issue for others to decide, just like the helmet law, but thats a whole new thread.

I agree that helmet use doesn't impact fellow drivers, and their use should be left to the operator's discretion.

OTOH, use of a seatbelt will allow for you to remain in your seat. Its use may permit you to remain under control of your vehicle after being hit, and allow for you to keep your vehicle(and your body) from careening into others. For that reason, i agree with seatbelt use being mandated.

In short, you can't ask for total freedom and be unwilling to pay for that freedom.

Personally I always wear seat belts, having been in several vehicle accidents, I know it only a matter of time before you hit something or something hits you.
This insurance stupidity, still?

When everything else that people do to themselves that cost lots of insurance money is outlawed, get back to me about not wearing seat belts. This seems to be the blind agenda for some of you.

But they're legal, and 20%+ of Americans do it every day. Cigarettes kill more people in a day than lack of seat belts do in a year. Where's all the outrage for that?

Yes, I know, this isn't the death by stupidity thread, but I bet some of you smoke. You put on your seat belts, but then poison yourselves many times a day. Ironic, isn't it, to then rage on about how dumb not wearing a seat belt is.

As I said above, I agree that seat belts are a good idea. But this is just silly. Saying things like "people who don't wear seat belts and get in a wreck cause more danger for emergency personnel" as some kind of reasoning to not insure seat belt avoiders is just ridiculous. Ridiculous. Any action can be seen as dangerous to someone else if it's assumed consequences are taken out far enough.

Yes. A head on collision of two cars both going 30 mph is roughly identical to hitting a stationary object at 30. You really would not want to be in a car that hit a non-deformable stationary object (a concrete wall or tree, for example) at 30 mph. Ugly.

Does this mean you are confident you can't have an accident unless someone else is on the road?
No, but I'd say the chances are less.

If he would have worn a seatbelt he would have opened the driver's door and walked away as the driver's side was not damaged.

So if you don't wear one, what is your reason?
Not wearing one is a device for the cleansing of the gene pool.

Because if you become paralyzed or sustain a severe traumatic brain injury, you will use an EXORBITANT amount of health care. Even if you have insurance, ultimately you will likely deplete your savings and be on state assistance/medicaid. This is because catastrophic injuries lead to many needs that are not covered by insurance, and you often lose your job.

I don't want to pay for your stupidity.

So yes, I also agree that smokers should have to pay more for their health insurance, just like auto insurance is higher for those with more accidents.

Each year, there are fewer and fewer, as these folks self-select themselves for elimination from the gene pool.

Yes, I suppose that this is a violation of one's personal freedom.
Is that the origin of New Hampshire's official slogan--Live Free and Then Die...a Horrible, Painful Death Because You Didn't Want To Have Your Freedom Infringed Upon By Wearing a Seat Belt...?
