They've improved dramatically in the past five years--no doubt about it; the Genesis coupe is a serious sports sedan with a riduclously modest price tag, and the Genesis is a solid automobile as well, with an equally startling price tag.
I really liked this thread. I'm planning to buy a new car soon and I seriously considering to buy a Hyundai, but I'm still with that concern if Hyundai's of these days are better than Hyundai's from old days, which are like toys, but reading this thread seems they have really improved their cars. I'm looking at the new Elantra or the Tucson SUV, still re-searching what is the best option.

Mine just passed 100k miles, absolutely bulletproof. Boring as anything on four wheels, underpowered, ugly, and annoying, but mechanically bulletproof.

I like the shape of the Kia rio hatch, reminds of me a Seat Leon from a few years back. I wouldn't buy one, but like the shape.

Wow so many bias opinions. Hyundai has been making reliable cars for around a decade now. Between my wife and I, we have owned a BMW, Honda, Buick, Olds, Chevy, Hyundai, Nissan, Subaru, Mazda, and Dodge. Our Hyundai was by far the most reliable car we owned. It had 173,000+ miles when we sold it and it was still as solid as the day we purchased it. No rattles or squeaks or anything. About a half dozen of our friends and family own Hyundai’s and most of them long term and no issues. I also researched their reliability when cross shopping and they have good ratings. In addition to that I am an active forum member on Hyundai, BMW, Subaru, Nissan, and Honda forums and an occasional user on forums for about a half dozen or more of other brands. Subaru’s are by far the worst as far as the forum’s go and BMWs seem to have an above average number of issue. Other than those the rest seem to be fairly equal.

I've only got 25k miles on my 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe but it’s been perfect so far. My buddy is still chugging along in the 2002 Hyundai Accent that I sold him years ago (it was my first car) and its got well over 100k miles on it with no reliability issues. Between the Accent and Genesis I owned a 1995 Nissan 300ZX, a 2003 Infiniti G35 and a 2007 BMW 530i (still have this one). The Hyundai’s have been the most reliable of the set.

I owned a Hyundai sedan. I think they are nice cars and a great bargain. You get a lot for what you pay for. However, they are nowhere close to offering the same quality as Toyota and Lexus. The ride quality is nowhere close to being the same. The ride is a little rough and you definitely feel the road. We had issues with our alternator in the Hyundai. The cabins aren't as quiet. The materials aren't as high quality. Huyndai uses a lot of plastic and things like the sun shade visor would fall off. Lastly, the level of service is not the same. Hyundai seemed to treat you like any other dealership whereas Toyota and Lexus offer great service.

I think it's a great car for a young adult, or someone starting out who wants a nice car but can't afford the higher luxury models. But if you have a choice to buy a Lexus or Toyota, you should definitely pursue that over buying a Hyundai in my opinion.

There's a big difference between "quality" and "reliability." Hyundais are definitely "reliable." Personally I was never impressed with Toyota's "quality" to begin with, though Honda's has definitely put Hyundai's to shame in the past (they always felt like swiss watches inside).

Don't you feel it's a LITTLE unfair to try and compare Hyundai to Lexus?

I agree Hyundais are very reliable. If you comparing two vehicles, you look at things beyond reliability. I bought a Toyota with a 7 year 90K warranty and never had to use it once. I didn't have one problem with that car. With my Hyundai, I had to replace the battery 4 times and always questioned the alternator and they never replaced it until the car stalled while driving and I had to have it towed to the dealership. The ride quality was not as soft. The cabin was not as quiet. The leather cracked early. Their sound system was not as clear or powerful. But overall, I would say it was pretty reliable despite that alternator issue. I have no problem saying they are reliable but no, they are not comparable to Toyotas IMHO

The Hyundai Genesis has a MSRP of $34-47k, and the Equus is $59-66k. That places those two models squarely into comparison with every Lexus cars short of the top-of-the-line LS model.

Toyota’s today certainly don't scream superior quality and material quality in modern Hyundai's is equivalent if not better in many cases. I've heard a good number of ride quality complains coming from new Camry/Accord owners as well.
