Just curious as we will be buying a car after not having one in New York City and moving in two months to Austin. Thanks!

My family with five drivers has six vehicles. I'm not going to list them. But Austin is full of all kinds, ranging from Nissan Leaf electric cars to various Hondas, Toyotas, pickup trucks, lots of CUVS and SUVS, and Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Aston Martins.

Austin was one of the first five cities to get the Volt. But there are many BMWs, Benz, Lexus, and Infiniti.

You should buy something that you like, suits your lifestyle and budget.

Something modest like a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic will be plenty of car to drive around the Austin metro area and for day trips to surrounding communities in Central Texas.

You will literally see everything here at one time or another. Everything.

What I suggest you look for is a car with:

1) Very good gas mileage.

2) Very good air conditioning.

Everything else is pretty much optional.

I moved to Austin and a couple months later, bought a pickup. I wanted to be higher up and have better bumpers when I drove on 35. The little-bitty car I came with just wasn't cutting it. I'd look out my back window and all I'd see coming up behind me was some guy's cow catcher.

(Conversely, I moved to SoCal and the first thing I did was buy a little convertible. When in Rome...)
