Has the ice melted yet? I'm trying to head to houston for my mom's birthday. I was driving last night and almost lost control of my vehicle in west campus going down hill.

Uh, it's fine out.

This morning it was fine out as long as you weren't a complete moron. I encountered three morons this morning. One spin out on Anderdon Mill. One moron in a ditch. And one moron up on a curb on Research. It is amazing, the sheer number of moronic drivers here. Good entertainment.

It is already safe to drive if you are sensible and cautious. Watch out for overpasses that could still be iced over. However it is 34 degrees outside, some of them might have icy patches still.

I drove all the way from Duncan, Oklahoma back to Austin on ice and snow packed roads one year coming back from a Christmas visit in a Honda Accord. Where I grew up people drive every day on road conditions far worse then anything I have seen in Austin in the last 33 years.

Some areas had some nasty smooth ice this morning...there is no 'smart' driving on smooth ice, with no sand.

It was sketchy in some areas this morning. I drove in around 8am in North Austin / Round Rock area and it was 20mph at best. It's totally fine out now as long as you watch on bridges, overpasses, etc.

Smooth ice? I love the terminology Southerners come up with because inclement weather is such a rare thing here.

Ice is ice, don't drive like a dope and your probability of crashing goes down significantly.

Well, the actually term would likely be 'black ice' or, sometimes, 'clear ice' Black ice - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have spent plenty of time in Minnesota and Colorado in the winter. The wouldn't go out and drive in the ice we get here occasionally, especially considering it isn't salted/sanded.

Yup, down from if you were driving like an idiot, but still probably 100X higher (or more) than if there were no ice.

I love that question, "when will it be safe to drive?"

Austin is never a safe place to drive! Bring in ice and...well, you saw the picture on the news didn't you? What was interesting: the car crashes at the beginning of this whole thing were from the roads being slippery from the stuff they were putting on the roads for the ice that was coming.
