Do a search on 2006 Jetta TDI problems. Since the headliner in the 2006 Jetta TDI has fallen down, plastic coating on the radio buttons is peeling off, paint on the window buttons is peeling off, and Valves in this year model weren't hardened properly leading to a $$$$$$$ repair. I will not buy another VW. It does get great fuel mileage though.

Check with edmunds.com and you can find the true cost to own at the bottom of the list under new cars.

How's the availability of diesel fuel in Austin?

I have a 2007 Eos convertible - and the VW brand seems to have had a pattern of increased maintenance issues.

Why would you think diesel is not widely available in Austin? I'm curious.

It is everywhere. There are more diesel pickups than diesel cars in Austin (though there are many).

Diesel is available all over Austin and is usually on the outer pumps. Years ago it was harder to find but times have sure changed.

Just hit 200k on my '91 4Runner (4x4, not this wimpy Texan 2WD garbage )...just now breaking it in! I see 300k on the horizon.

We actually are able to bike and walk to most places, including work; however, sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate or we plain don't feel like it, so we have a little Toyota Yaris that get's fabulous gas mileage, is zippy, and fits into the many tiny parking spaces you find often in central Austin. The 4Runner mainly sits all week and comes out for kayak trips, bicycle hauling, camping, rock climbing, or especially dirty dog park trips It's nice to have a weekend wagon around. That'd be my recommendation, but if you're going to go the one car route, Austin has more than enough oversized pickup trucks to last a lifetime...go the zippy, fuel-sipping hatchback route: Honda Fit, Fiat, etc.

That's why I asked - last I lived there, it seemed diesel pumps were few and far between.

Get something reliable, you can spend more on repairs than fuel if you arent careful. Use consumers reports or JD powers. I recommend an Infiniti G37 sedan used is best as Infinitis dont hold values like some

You drive about as much as I do - my 2000 Jeep Cherokee just rolled 80,000 miles:

Mrs.Sco's 2006 Pontiac G6 GT is pushing 50,000 miles.
