We NEED people to move here, because if our city isn't on some statistic then we are nothing nothing nothing, just another 500k city among a sea of about 50 other similar cities in the country. We can ignore our transient culture-less nature and become a statistic as long as people can move here and make a quick buck, because that's basically all we have is money and showmanship.

Even if we did retain our southern heritage sadly it wasn't truly earned it was earned on the backs of slaved sadly.
History is the events of the past - all of the events of the past, not just the ones that are pleasant and acceptable. I don't know of a situation where anyone avoids certain aspects of history because it is racist, sexist, dark, etc. If it happened, it's history.

Atlanta isn't "trying" to have the world's busiest airport. Hartsfield has held that title for a few years...and when it wasn't the busiest, it was the 2nd busiest. No one is trying to make it anything it is not.

Most residents of Atlanta don't really care if we're on top of any rankings list...but it Atlanta ranks highly in some category, then great. Any city that is highly ranked in some way will market and advertise that information in order to attract new businesses and residents. Why wouldn't they?

Speak for yourself regarding culture. I'm not culture-less, and the world around you isn't either. How can a city of 5 million people be without culture? That many people living in the same area will be overflowing with culture.

Well...since 90% of southern residents never owned a slave, I can't really agree that anything was completely earned on the backs of slaves. Southern history is a combination of everyone who lived/lives here and all of the events that have happened here. If you choose not to "retain your southern heritage" then that's on you - and nobody else.

Because Sherman burned down Atlanta in 1864 and we have never recovered.

Never recovered? I would say Atlanta has come back 1000 fold. Before the Civil War Atlana was hardly a blip on the radar. We don't feel like Gone with the Wind because we never were Gone with the Wind. Check out Madison or Washington Ga if that's what you're seeking

It was a tongue and cheek reference as to why there are no women walking around with curtain rods for dresses and men dressed up as Rhett Butler.

"Scarlett, that dress is beautiful; I can't my eyes off of it!"
"Do you like it, Rhett? I saw it in a window and I had to have it!" LOL

"If I don't find a dress by tonight -- IT'S CURTAINS!"

I think I see a pattern developing...now where are my earbobs?

If you're looking for a "Gone with the Wind" feel, you're in the wrong portion of the state entirely. Head south. We in northern Georgia can grow up in small, suburban towns, but we're not "moonlight and magnolia" people. North Georgians, you could say, are somewhat elitists.

Additionally, you have to look at the history of Atlanta. It was established as a terminal for trains and was burned to the ground by Sherman in the 1800s, towards the end of the antebellum era. North GA is odd because most of it was burned in the March to the Sea and lost that really "southern" feel many people feel exists in other deep south states.

Atlanta is a charming city and was named one of America's cities of the future. It is a southernized NYC and we pride ourselves in being "The Empire State of the South." If you're looking for that GWTW feel, look towards Savannah.
