A group of Georgia senators says anyone getting welfare should have to “engage in personal growth activities” and they have introduced legislation to make it a law, reports Morris News Service.
Sen. William Ligon, (R-Brunswick), introduced Senate Bill 312 along with Sens. Buddy Carter (R-Pooler), John Albers (R-Roswell) and Senate President Pro Tempore Tommie Williams (R-Lyons), the news service reported.
The law, if approved, would apply to anyone getting food stamps or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families. Both programs are federally funded and administered by the state.
Welfare recipients would have to participate in activities that include working toward a diploma or technical education, learning to read, or “attending self-development classes.”
“We’re trying to equip them to obtain better-paying jobs,” Ligon said, Morris reported.

Senators Ligon, Carter, Williams and Albers are casting a lathe-like focus on the number one problem facing the recovery of Georgia's economy. This is a matter of the upmost legislative import facing Georgia! Everyone support this! Huzzah!

How about make them pick-up trash on the side of the road, at parks, schools, and other public spaces? That way they are giving back to those that help them.

Stupid Politicians there are more pressing political issues than what people do on food stamps.

My older brother who is Autistic and has psychosomatic seizures is on food stamps. He gets $140 a month in stamps. Does he need to have "enrichment classes."

It's about time we held perpetual losers to a higher standard. It's obvious that they are not going to make any effort as long as they can get free "assistance" without lifting a finger.

Mgyeldel. It's painfully obvious that we are not talking about disabled people here. Take a chill pill.

Hmmm...possibly personal finance and how to save for retirement? Of course if you're a senior citizen and you're living on food stamps, something tells me it could be a little too little and a little too late.

What if they (the welfare recipients) aren't able to get that better job once they complete their engagement in those "personal growth activities"?

There are already plenty of educated people right now in this craptacular economy who are educated and still can't get a job.
