Our power bill went from $134 to $244 this month, will only a small increase in power used. My wife called, and was informed it was now on their "summer rate." I can't believe our power bill would almost double. She was advised by the person on the phone we should leave our AC on 78 all the time. This is crazy, our bills were never this high in Charlotte, and there was no differing rate based on the season. I know there is more power used in the summer, but we were charged the same per kwh, just more in our total bill from usage, not charged a higher rate....
And someone told us about the budget plan, what's that about?

Must be a lack of regulation I guess. So if they can get away with sticking it to us then that's just what they're going to do.

In New York we used oil for heat and the price would fluctuate according to the price of oil so you had to be prepared for anything. Companies would let you "lock in" at a certain price which was not so good when you locked in at the peak and the cost went down by December. And there were numerous companies to choose from (mainly family owned) who were always trying to get you to change.

This is pretty normal and I think the case anywhere you go in the US. Power companies rates vary on demand. When there is higher demand, typically in the summer due to A.C and during the day, rates are higher. They hope that the higher rates will result in less demand, aka people wait until nighttime to do laundry, etc, so the grid is not overwelmed. This isnt the case as much in the in winter as a lot of people have gas furnaces so less electricity is in demand. The budget plan is just that the rates are equalized during the year, so you are paying a constant amount. What they would do is look at the total usage last year and just average it per month.
