Two Georgia lawmakers want welfare recipients to take drug tests, a controversial policy that’s been struck down as unconstitutional in other states, reports the Athens Banner-Herald.

Rep. Jason Spencer, (R-Woodbine), and Sen. John Albers, (R-Roswell), said Thursday they plan to introduce legislation to require people to pass a drug test if they are applying to receive cash welfare.

What's wrong with that? I have to pass a drug test to get/keep my job. What's with making it manditory for welfare recipients to do the same?

I agree with the premise of this legislation.

Well, don't stop there. Drug test the members of the state legislature as well, they are receiving public funding as well. Also, Florida did this and 90+% of the applicants passed, which means there is no financial incentive.

Yes, our not-so-bright Governor just implemented this program, and it was recently thrown out by the court.

So Gov. Scott vows to appeal (and use our tax dollars to pay all of the legal fees!). We've already wasted tax dollars on all of the tests which showed that barely anyone is using drugs (a rate well below the general population). We reimbursed applicants for the price of the test if they passed.

A massive waste of money and a new overhead expense to boot!

The tests in FL were for TANF which is Temporary Assistance to Needy Families. (this only applies to whatever program you have at the state level)

Any able-bodied man under the age of 45 who's on the dole should be required to do 5 chin-ups before receiving a check. I'd let the women off with sit-ups but they'd have to do at least 25.

Being under the influence of illegal substances could adversely affect your job performance which might put you and your co-workers in danger, not to mention negatively affect your employer's bottom line. How does that apply to those receiving public assistance?

This whole thing is a waste of money. If you want to truly reform the system, then do that. This ain't it.
