Sorry, two stickies per forum is the policy, but we will give some thought to how to keep a useful thread like this handy.

I was driving to Bisbee Az and noticed lots and lots of big black bugs, or spiders or something crossing Interstate 80. Any idea what they are?

Do you ever pick flowers from outside and bring them into your home? I used to do this and got some bug the size of a fleck of pepper. They came off of some lilacs I had picked and put in my apt. These bugs bred like crazy and got into all of my food, except what was in the refrigerator. I ended up have to bomb the place with one of those chemical cans. I have never brought flowers in from outside again and have also never had that problem again. I don't know what those little bugs were called though.

My wife picked this little guy up the last full day we were in AZ (Green Valley) last May (she thought it was a dead moth wedged between the wall and carpet!). Didn't get stung. I took it outside and took this photo. What kind of scorpion is it??

I've seen a bunch of these grasshoppers around Tucson lately. This one was over two inches long.

Horse lubber (Taeniopoda eques)

we just returned from 2 weeks in Tucson. Didn't see any of those GIGANTIC grasshoppers there, but out at Karchner Caverns near Benson we saw several of them - they are HUGE (about the dimensions of a BIC lighter). WOW! Also noticed the biggest bees I've ever seen in my life as well as several large (and very cool) sphinx moths. For the life of me I can't figure out why desert insects are so large - from the tarantulas to the bees to the moths to the grasshoppers, things down there tend to be king sized. Must be a survival trait of some kind but I don't understand how.

Also, for the first time ever down there we were eaten alive by mozzies - both in the Tucson Foothills area and also out near Benson.

Ken
