Description: Coppin State University is a historically African-American college that was established in 1900 as a private normal school to train elementary school teachers. Coppin, which became a part of the university system in 1988, currently offers degrees and certification programs in dentistry, engineering, pharmacy, criminal justice, and social work and teaching. It also offers graduate degrees in the arts and sciences, including nursing and teacher education. Originally a day school, most of Coppin’s 3,300 students are day-trippers, but a new 300-bed residence hall attracts students from out of state to the 52-acre campus.

Description: BIC was founded in 1972 to offer certificates in culinary arts. It has grown to include bachelor’s and associate’s degrees in culinary arts and hospitality business and management. Graduate degrees in hospitality are also available. Classes are hands-on for all students, who can be seen heading to class in their chef’s jackets and carrying their knife cases. They get to test their skills every weekday at lunchtime during the semester—and we get to see how good they are. The Bay Atlantic Club is staffed by students and open Monday through Friday 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 206 East Redwood St. Call ahead if you want to go, for a reservation and to be sure the restaurant is open. They close for school holidays. The Bay Atlantic Club’s phone number is (410) 752-1448 ext. 24
