Description: Although the University of Maryland’s main campus is in College Park, Maryland, the university began here in Baltimore in 1807 with the founding of the School of Medicine. Davidge Hall, a lecture hall and operating theater built in 1812 and now a National Historic Landmark, is the oldest building in the United States in continuous use for medical teaching. In 1816 a School of Law was added. In 1840 the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, Dental School opened as the first dental college in the world. In 1841, the Maryland College of Pharmacy was begun; and in 1889, the School of Nursing opened. The most recent addition was the School of Social Work, in 1961. Today, this 61-acre campus for research and technology encompasses 62 buildings in West Baltimore near the Inner Harbor. The university is Maryland’s only public academic health, human services, and law center. Seven professional and graduate schools train the majority of the state’s physicians, nurses, dentists, lawyers, social workers, and pharmacists. The university community gives more than 2 million hours a year in service to the public. It has close to 6,100 students served by more than 1,600 faculty members. There are 42 graduate programs offered.
