Description: The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) was founded in 1966. A separate school from the University of Maryland, College Park, UMBC has more than 12,870 undergraduate and graduate students studying in the liberal arts and sciences at its 500-acre campus. The focus is on cutting-edge science and technology and the visual and performing arts while billing itself a “public research university.” In this regard, UMBC offers 54 majors and 45 minors and 20 certificate programs in the physical and biological sciences, social and behavioral sciences, engineering, mathematics, information technology, humanities, and visual and performing arts. UMBC also offers the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology, a NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC)/UMBC JCET’s research focuses on themes that align with NASA’s earth science interests: engineering, mesoscale atmospheric processes, climate and radiation, atmospheric chemistry and dynamics, hydrospheric and biospheric sciences, and solar system science including geodesy and geophysics.
