How could this happen in the quaint little town of Sequim?

Mayor Aims to Turn Small Town Into QAnon, USA
“I think we’re a little microcosm of what’s happening at the national level,” said Marsha Maguire, a resident of Sequim, Washington.

That's why some people prefer Port Townsend.

Geez that's strange. I was told Sequim was pretty much "Little California" which is about as opposite of what you're saying as it gets. I never though of Sequim as "conservative" but hey, things could be worse.

Small town mayors have little power. This one is small in every sense. That said, his political opinions may or may not get him re-elected. If he was smart he would keep extreme political views to himself.

I have family in Sequim (from California, of course) and that is the only place where I saw Trump signs in both the 2016 and 2020 campaigns. The newcomers, mostly retirees from CA and from Seattle are liberal, but the natives of Sequim, Port Angeles and Joyce are mostly conservative. I found it interesting that people with such different political views got along so well as neighbors.

The country has always been about evenly split politically and we’ve always gotten along pretty well. I hope we never forget how to do that and can pass that along to the younger generation.

That really has nothing to do with the OP, where the mayor is apparently promoting conspiracies and got the City Manager fired when challenged over it.

This seems like an attempt to have the "other side" accept this as some sort of unity. We know that's not possible, especially when the type that say that sort of thing also complain about Covid measures, masks, contact tracing, etc. For those implying they "just want to get along", they don't really. They want to undermine safety efforts during a pandemic while weaponizing the word "unity" because they are red voters living in a blue state. It's sad to see Sequim go through this; it's a cute town and we usually stay there when on the OP because it's centrally located.

Because I really don’t care about the OP I don’t know what Qanon is and I don’t care.

I was talking to the poster I responded to! I really do believe what I said there.

You have a nice day though Seacove!

I thought that Qonan supporters died off when it became clear that everything they said was untrue and it was all just a big confidence scam.

There are still the die-hard True Believers. Too emotionally invested to just walk away.
