I agree. Born & raised in Biloxi and then lived in Diamondhead till 2005. Chappy's was one of our favorites on the coast. Glad to see him in TN.

Yes, Pancake Pantry in Nashville (Hillsboro Village, to be exact) is wonderful. Would people line up for mediocrity? I think not! LOL!

I've seen Vince Gill there many times. He knows good food!

I HAD to google Bobby Q's banana pudding. Came up with a couple other posts here on City-Data forum mentioning it, as well as a link from somewhere else that mentioned they saw Bobby Q's on Food Network. Someone else mentioned that it's also called 'Tennessee Tirimisu'. I've GOT to get that recipe! Apparently, they also have good BBQ there?
Bobby Q's will be a definite stop when we're in Cookeville!

It's "tiramisu". And there's more variations than you can shake a stick at.

Try a strawberry tiramisu.

I love google! Didn't find the recipe for Bobby Q's banana pudding, tho. I guess it's a secret recipe. Found a recipe for Sweet Potato Pudding, sounded good. I was also browsing thru the Pennsylvania Forums, found a few people griping how they hate PA - called it a hillbilly redneck state, with the only civilized areas being on both ends, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, with nothing but hillbillies in between. They said Pennsylvania is called 'Dixie of the North'. Well, if so, then yeh! Heck, I'm proud to be from hillbilly stock. You say 'progressive', and I'll go the opposite way!

Anyway, I also found this website that lists good restaurants in TN, let's see how it compares with what people are posting here:

http://www.dixiedining.com/dixie/tennessee.htm (broken link)

A & R Bar B Q - Memphis (Added May, 2002)
(1802 Elvis Presley Boulevard; 38106 - 901 774-7444) A favorite of R & B legend Isaac Hayes; Andrew Pollard, A & R's owner, has done quite well since founding this BBQ joint back in 1983; BBQ Pork over Spaghetti is one of the more unusual items on the menu here.
Arnold's Country Kitchen - Nashville (Added June, 2004)
(605 8th Ave South - 615 256-4455) Greens, fried chicken and more!

Bar-B-Cutie – Nashville
(5221 Nolensville Road – 615 834-6556) Open daily from 10 am – 10 pm; serving pork shoulder, baby-back ribs, and mesquite grilled chicken.

Barksdale Restaurant - Memphis (Added June, 2004)
(237 Cooper - 901 722-2193) This is an old school diner run by Bob Henry; located on the edge of the trendy Cooper-Young District, there is nothing trendy about this joint; no frills comfort food served up in a homey atmosphere; the wood paneled walls are decorated with pennants and posters representing area sports teams; meat and three lunches are the way to go; during my last visit I opted for the Baked Chicken Breast, Turnip Greens, Cornbread Stuffing with Gravy, and Buttered Carrots; portions are healthy and the price is right; try to save some room in that belly for dessert; they make a wide variety of sweet treats including Chess Pies; the Memphis Grizzlies NBA team used the Barksdale as the backdrop for a 2004 TV campaign; you may spot a local athlete or celeb when you visit Bob's Barksdale Restaurant.

Beacon Light Tea Room - Lyles (Added August, 2006)
(6276 State Route 100; 931 670-3880) Country ham, fried chicken, hash brown casserole ... it's all good, folks!

(5469 Poplar Avenue, 38119; 901 761-9696) Opened back in 1994, the Blue Plate Cafe serves up a tasty plate lunch and fantastic breakfast selections all day long; they've even opened a second location in nearby Cordova, TN (a Memphis 'burb); the meat loaf, country ham, chicken fried steak, homemade biscuits and sawmill gravy, chunky hash browns, and daily fruit cobblers are all worth sampling; they also offer an all you can eat Catfish special on Friday & Saturday nights; open 7 days a week from 6 a.m. to closing time; Lunch is served beginning at 11a.m; get there early if you can, it's a popular weekday lunch stop for the business crowd.

Bobby Q's BBQ and Catfish - Cookeville

Bolton's Spicy Chicken and Fish - Nashville (Added July, 2006)
(624 Main Street; 615 254-8015) The spicy chicken, not quite as incendiary as Nashville's Prince's Hot Chicken Shack, is served along your choice of white or green beans, spaghetti, cole slaw, or potato salad; the price is right at Bolton's (meals run about $7) and they also serve ribs, fried catfish, and pork chops.

Bozo's Hot Pit Bar-B-Q - Mason (Added December, 2003)
(342 Hwy 70 - 901 294-3400) Open Tuesday - Saturday from 10:30 am until 11 pm; fine pork BBQ at the longtime Q Mecca in rural Tennessee; located just a stone's throw from Gus' World Famous Fried Chicken, Bozo's offers their pig in many varieties (White Meat, Brown Meat, Mixed Meat --- pulled or chopped). Bozo's recommends pulled, mixed meat and will serve you that way unless otherwise requested; be sure to grab a bottle of their tangy BBQ sauce (I prefer the mild) before heading homeward.

Breece's - Centerville

Brooks Shaw and Son Country Store - Jackson
(901 668-1223)

Brother Jack's - Knoxville
(1710 University Ave - 615 522-4684)

Bryant's Bar-B-Q & Breakfast - Memphis (Added May, 2004; Updated May, 2005)
(3965 Summer Avenue; 38122; 901 324-7494) Really good homemade biscuits; try them with the country ham. Open just for breakfast and lunch; closes at 12:30 pm; country ham, grits, "egg-citing" omelets, homemade biscuits with gravy or locally made sorghum molasses; at lunch we recommend the heaping bowl of white beans with huge chunks of lean ham (served with sliced onion and three big cornbread muffins); save room for dessert ... their fried pies are highly recommended by the folks at Southern Living (April 2005); choose from peach or apple fried pies ... or dig into their thick and intensely sweet cobblers (blackberry or peach were offered the day we stopped in)

Oh yeh - did we mention their homemade desserts? They will melt in your mouth!!

This list is a little outdated. A couple of the places listed are closed now.

I'm going to go eat at Swett's tomorrow because I need to go to the Farmers Market.

I traveled to Philadelphia several years ago when I was a senior in high school. It definately was a culture shock to me. I had never seen so many pigeons in the streets, homeless people beating each other up, police on horseback, CRAZY taxi drivers and strange food. It certainly wasn't hillbilly back then but oh, my "times, they are a changin".

You know, it looked wrong when I was typing it, but I was in a rush and didn't go back to correct it. No matter what way it's spelled, I do love tiramisu. There's a little family run Italian restaurant, about a 45 minute drive from here, but sooooo worth the drive for the food and the price. Their tiramisu is THE best I've ever had, just purely melt in your mouth. Their pasta is very good. But, there's another Italian restaurant in McKeesport that makes better pasta and sauce, and wonderful meatballs. They have a 'family style dinner' where you pay $21 for 2 servings each of:
Lasagna, spaghetti, gnocchi, ravioli, as well as 2 meatballs. YUM! I keep promising Lou I'll take him there, but it's a 1 1/2 hr drive from here. Next time we're down there visiting my son and daughter, we'll go.

Another restaurant nearby is a family run Greek restaurant, with good baklava.

The best BBQ restaurants around here are in the bars. Little dingy places on the most part, but gooooood BBQ!

For fish, well, as stated before, it's the Catholic churches selling these gigantic filets. 2 to your plate, so large they overlap the plate both sides, along with pieroghies or macaroni and cheese and french fries.

I can't wait to sample some good places in Tennessee!

But, there's just some food that I'll just have to have shipped down.

blessings, Shen
