Kind of reminds me of the old joke "you know what the best thing to do there is? ....get the F out"

I very well may be. In this regard though, I'm very spoiled where I live now. I'm a five minute walk from this place
April gigs at a glance (http://www.whelanslive.com/content.asp?ID=93 - broken link)

Dublin's got a great music scene for a small city, due to the fact that its a national capital and the first stop on european tours from the US.

Go to any of the big concerts (that don't come through Syracuse) at the house of blues or the arena, or fly out of one of the biggest international airports in the country to whereever you'd like to go (Good luck getting a flight to anywhere besides a hub out of hancock international --- what a joke!)

Of course, you could try any of the local restaurants in Orlando (besides the chains) that would dwarf what you could find in the cuse. There are literally 15+ indian restaurants in Orlando. You're lucky to find 5 in the cuse (and the quality isnt as good).

And of course, the beach is only 45 mins away

Somebody misses orlando..... try going snowboarding in Florida.

Personally, thats all I really have to say, I've been without snow for three years and I can't take the lack of it anymore. That, and I don't really see the point of looking on the downside of things. I just don't see the use in a tit-for-tat. I've lived in NYC, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, and Dublin. All places have ups and downs and in the end they are what you make of them. I can have fun at the ballet, at a rock gig, on a ski slope, in my parents basement with some beers and some friends, anywhere that I want to. If you feel so strongly that you need to defend Orlando from lowly Syracuse then it must be nicer than you make it to be. I never knew they were in such direct competition.

they really shouldn't be which is why the findings of this study are so stupid to begin with. Syracuse is a more quaint, historic and IMO rural city with the beauty of 4 seasons, while Orlando is a more urban and cosmopolitan, and racially diverse city with abundant sunshine and plenty of fun things to do for both locals and tourists.

I've been stuck in syracuse now for a few years, and can't wait to get back to FL. Snow is OK I guess, but turning dark at 4 PM isn't, and neither is snow in april (although we were lucky this year). I miss the fact that there isn't a great airport in syracuse, and that the only real diversity is in the number of italian places around. To get to a real city, you have to drive at 3-4 hours. With Orlando, there's every kind of cuisine you can imagine (and if you really think it's just chain restaurants, try getting away from Downtown Disney and I-drive).

You sound like one of the people that would fit right in posting on the Syracuse.com forums where all anyone ever does is complain. If you don't like Syracuse that is fine but to constantly come on here and put down Syracuse while at the same time talking about Florida like it's some utopia is getting a little ridiculous. Syracuse.com forums are full of "glass is half empty" people.

But yes, I am going to take issue with a study that tries to tell people that Syracuse is more fun than Vegas or Orlando. Something tells me that if it were a national poll, syracuse might have a tough time competing

rubygreta - I could not agree with you more. I have lived in both places, Central Florida and Las Vegas. I also spend a lot of time in Southeast Florida. I can tell you, once you have frequented the tourist spots, it gets old and Cities like Orlando and Vegas are just like any other city. It is nice to see exciting things happen in your own home town, that is why I get so passionate about new developments in Syracuse and CNY.

Syracuse has Armory Square/Franklin Square/Hanover Square which are CNY equivalent to the east and/or west village, tribeca, or soho. They have a ways to go like a downtown cinema and grocery store, but those Syracuse locations are on their way. Syracuse can boast a home grown destination like the Dinosour BBQ.

Syracuse has great entertainment up on the university hill area on Marshall Street, plus East Genessee Street is blossoming. It will really blossom now that the Center of Excellence is complete and the CNY Biotechnology Research Center is completed as more people frequent that area of downtown. As pointed out by proulxfamily, the Westcott area has also become a thriving neighborhood anchored by the Westcott Theatre. There is also the Hawley-Green Historic Neighborhood close by that has transitioned into a revitalized and diverse neighborhood.

If you want Vegas style entertainment, there is Vernon Downs and Turning Stone Casino Resort just 20 to 30 miles from Syracuse. It has gaming, shopping, restuarants, PGA golf, spas, etc

If you want a Mall of America type shopping experience, there is (continuing drama) of CCM/Destiny USA. I know, I know, there are many opinions on this project, but I use it to make my point. Hopefully the Citi/Pyramid dispute can be resolved and construction can commence. I also hope that the inner-harbor can find a developer once the financial markets rebound.

If you want Orlando type entertainment, there is the Action Sports Park, Greek Peak Resort, etc. There is also great recration all around the area, lakes, hills, moutains, streams, fishing, camping, etc. If you want top notch academic institutions, colleges sports, etc. Syracuse has it!

The point is, Syracuse has a composite of destinations found in other parts of the country. The problem with Cities like Vegas is that they are only known for gaming, Orlando for Disney, beyond that they really have nothing. I am sure there are other things that Syracuse has that I have not mentioned, like Cazenovia, Skaneatelas, or the Finger Lakes. If you want some different, I think Ithaca is a fun place just 40 minutes away.

When I was growing up in Syracuse in the late 70's early 80's, Syraucse had none of this stuff! I think it has a lot to do with the transition in its economy from a heavy manufacturing to a highly educated, green-based economy.
