Forbes Magazine ranked 380 metropolitan areas based on unemployment rate, violent crime, average salary, cultural opportunities, home affordability, and cost of living. Aside from Albany, Syracuse was rated higher than any NY city and scored especially well on the culture index and violent crime rate, ranking 18th best in terms of culture and 23rd lowest in violent crime. Syracuse rated only 2 spots lower than Buffalo, the self purported "mecca" of upstate culture. The Salt City's culture index also beat cities including Albany, Charlotte, Omaha, Louisville, Nashville, and Memphis.
