It's worth mentioning that the Subaru engines have never been terribly frugal, so don't expect amazing MPG figures.
Also worth mentioning is that some parts can be relatively expensive, and due to the design, some repairs are relatively labor intensive, thus (unless you do it yourself) relatively costly.
That said, they're generally of the better built cars, and very reliable, so overall I doubt the maintenance budget would be any higher than, say, a Toyota.
Another note is that the transmissions can be picky when it comes to what type of oil they like (manuals) and always run Synthetic oil on the engine. pref with at least 5000 mile changes, if your driving style is... inspired.
The STi gets horrendous mileage for a car of its size and engine displacement, turbo or not. It's a high-strung, high-performance engine and you pay the price at the pump.
Which is why the 05-09 Legacy GT is such a good option. All the performance with none of the compromise.
You most certainly don't get all of the performance. An STi will flat-out spank a Legacy GT in all the ways that matter. And that means of course that there are compromises involved, though which you'd call a compromise depends on your priorities. The Legacy compromises cornering/handling for comfort; on the other side of the coin, the STi compromises comfort for cornering/handling.

It's important to point out that this really only applies to the 2009 and up WRX.
My stage 2 09 WRX gets mid 20's city and 30+ hwy. Why does everyone just assume they get bad gas mileage?
I don't have to assume, I've owned one. My brother still has one. And you're FOS. Neither of us have never got 30mpg in a bone-stock WRX no matter how gingerly we drive/drove them -- never mind in an STi. 28mpg is the best I ever did at standard highway speeds.
It's not an assumption. The 2011 WRX STi gets 17mpg city and 23mpg hwy.
The 2006 STi gets 18 city and 24 hwy.
Did you know that in 2008 the EPA completely changed the way gas mileage is rated??????????????????????????? If you are only getting whats on the sticker you drive like a maniac.
