Once I stopped believing, even twice when I thought I might very well die, I did NOT suddenly begin praying again.
You know where I was on 9/11. People who prayed lived and people who prayed died, and people who did not pray lived or died, and afterward some people became more religious and some people became less religious. Or their beliefs changed form.

Oh yeah and, just go to a battlefield and watch sworn atheists becoming ardent believers, the very moment shelling begins and their lives are endangered.
See, this is an interesting indirect proof that, pretty much in most humans, there is inherent faith in some sort of a supernatural force, watching over them, that they can refer to, in need. Difference between say believer and atheist is, one is constantly IN that force and the other reaches to it only in a grave situation.

My wife and I (both unbelievers) just found ourselves in a foxhole, and it never occurred to either of us to reach out to the supernatural, as you put it. Further: we were delivered from the foxhole despite never asking god or anyone else for deliverance from it. Go figure. If you want details, go to the A&A and read the thread "Mordant's Wife".

Thank you for this post. Funny, it had never occurred to me what the foxhole 'thing' is...a silly stereotypic cliche. About 2 weeks ago I was in the ER for heart issues. Funny...I didn't pray.

You go. Do not just claim it happens, go and see it happen yourself. Because when I did live ammunition training, not once did I ask any gods to protect me.
If religious people believe in gods, why do they even dig foxholes? Either their god will look after them, or they get to meet their maker sooner.

Just, please, don't be diminutive about people, you know nothing about. rest assured, you don't have the high ultimate knowledge on what is right and what is wrong. You simple have exactly that - preconceived notion/stereotype, you are, by basic reverse psychology, superimposing onto anyone, who is not sharing your standpoint.

And indeed how do we know who prayed when they died? We don’t. This is such a sad and horrific event, for those who watched, those who lost, those who survived, those who rescued, for everyone. We know in the aftermath religious places were full of people who needed to pray. It brought forth generosity in people’s hearts, in New York city yet. There was no winning to be found anywhere.
