I came across someone in another area of the forum that seemed to believe that "The Golden Rule" was unique to Christianity, or maybe just a statement in the Bible in general. I didn't bother attempting to educate this member, as it didn't seem worthwhile or that it would go anywhere.
I learned some time ago, that many religions have that "rule", and although worded not exactly, it amounts to the exact same thing. The "rule" has a very interesting history. I chose this article(has a list of 17), although there are many others:
"Mentioned as early as 3,000 BC".................I do think, not mentioned enough anymore. Whether one has any religious beliefs or not, it is a worthwhile endeavor as a member of the human race.
I figure this is something that Prehistoric humans figured out when they realized that they could survive better in groups than they could solo.
We know that even many species of animals who live collectively have a sense of fairness and have determined that cooperating with each other is to their benefit.

Not quite. It is basically quid pro quo, a convenient transaction that benefits both parties. "Do no harm" is how many religions and thoughts define ethical value. Ahimsa, non-violence, is valued as the ideal in both Hinduism and more so in Buddhism. Kindness and compassion is. These are proactive actions and restrain that one holds himself responsible for.
The subject has been discussed here before, although it never hurts to remind anyone.
I've posted this a few times in such threads.
My mom...being Catholic...didn't seem to appreciate the Golden Rule. Her 'defense' was, "What if someone is sentenced to jail or prison? The judge wouldn't want to go to prison...right?
No, mom, wrong. The REASON that person goes to prison is because *they* didn't want to follow the Golden Rule.
